My son, whose PIR is Aug. 5th, has been assigned the rate MM.  His first choice was EM.  Can and do rates ever get changed?  If yes, what would my son need to do in order for him to at least try to get his rate changed from MM to EM (or even to ET if that might be more accessible)?

Any feedback will be appreciated... THANK YOU!

TC, thanks for asking.  I decided to not put her through chemo and just give her prednisone.  So far she's acting just like her normal self, but her glands are still getting larger.  She turned 14 last week.

To those of you who offered advice about A School (effort, GPA, etc.), thank you!  I hope you don't mind if I take the liberty of copying and pasting your comments to share with my SR who will be going to GC on Aug. 6th.  Pearls of wisdom from those who speak from experience are worth more than any encouraging pep talk I could give my son.  I really appreciate you for sharing!

Jaranda, welcome.  If your son is in the Nuke program, his A school will be at Goose Creek.

Oh, one more bit of advice.  I think this would work for any one of the schools (A, power, prototype), but my son said this about power school:  He tried to do really well in the tests the first few weeks, because they're just starting out with the material, so it's a bit easier (not built up on, as Emily mentioned).  That way, he started out with higher test scores, so as the material has been getting more difficult and the going has gotten tougher (and he's been more likely to maybe not do as well), his GPA is still respectable.  Because, yes, he's trying to be close to the top of the class to have more options.

We go to watch the horse races occasionally and I love watching them, but not so good on picking winners.  I don't necessarily pick the 'prettiest', but I pick either because I like the name or I just like the way the horse looks - I'm partial to grays :-).  And I only bet $2 also.  So even if I lose every bet, I only have lost $20 or so for the day.

Everyone with a 2.5 GPA graduates but graduating in the top ten percent of your class opens more doors than being in the bottom ten percent. When they compare the nukes' dream sheets of where they want to be stationed versus what billets are available the Navy goes by class rank. Not just in the Navy. My nephew graduated first in his class in Coast Guard rescue swimmer school and his first choice of duty station was Hawaii, and he got it. But I would not stress over it just do your best.

My nuke and I went to the races one day...it was a Friday with $1 hot dogs and $1 beer...had no idea what we were doing in terms of the horses, but had a blast!!! Have fun Amanda :)
Comment by Kat (MM Nuke) on July 23, 2011 at 10:30am

Audrey, to add to what Emily said, passing is passing and their grades might be up and down, all over the place, so don't get too stressed out.  My son is in power school and he's had ups and downs.  Just got a 2.77 on a chemistry test, which is his lowest grade ever, BUT he passed.  Chemistry just isn't his thing so he isn't stressed out about it.  He got much higher grades in Calc. and physics.  It all averages out.  He's tried to find that balance to do well enough without making himself go crazy.

My son has a word for student nukes who break the rules and get masted & denuked, and the word is dumbass.

Do we want guys like that, who refuse to obey simple orders, to someday be operating the nuclear reactors on our submarines? Not me. Lol.
