Re- buying vehicle. I heard that the local Charleston area car dealers really target & take advantage of young inexperienced military guys. Such a crying shame when they should look for ways to help and support our guys instead of exploiting them. Anyway, my husband was able to find our Sailor a great little used auto for under 5K. He will only really need a vehicle for around 3 years until he is on a ship. After that he will be able to upgrade to a newer model. We are fortunate to live only a few hours from GC so it was much easier to get it to him. Good luck to all but proceed with caution! USAA had the best rates for auto insurance and they cater specifically to the military.

I don't know where the "just now delete comment" came from, I'm posting from my phone and it's a challenge to use this little keyboard with my thumbs.

Delete Comment Emily - It's wonderful that you want to help him. Look at http://www.mathusee.com/ . It is a homeschool curriculum that has been used for years to help teach math. It is also quite effective in teaching students with a variety of educational challenges. This is because it uses a combination of learning methods - auditory and kinesthetic as well as the visual. They have a section on their website specifically for special need students. They also have online classes. I have heard excellent testimonies about this program.

I am not affiliated with the program in any way. While I did homeschool my five children, I didn't use this program myself. I did attend a workshop put on by the teacher who developed the system. It was great.

Michimom, your story about the friend's son who bought a motorcycle gives me hope. My son is torturing me with his plans to buy a bike. I am adamantly opposed and have not sent a copy of his birth certificate even after repeated requests ... my best friend's husband lost his leg, my brother-in-law has lived 49 years in agony after a bike crash, my cousin died on her bike (AND her husband died the day after her funeral on his bike!!) ... and my nurse friends tell me they call bike accident victims "road kill." I am begging my son: you want to feel the wind in your face, ride a fast horse!!!

Emily - I don't have a route yet.  That's my next step.  Trying to figure out how Mapquest will take me - south thru Indy area and east or what.  Not sure.  Mountains shouldn't bother me too me or my daughter.  We lived in Southern California - 7000 ft. up in the mountains for 10 yrs.  I think I have that one!  AT least I hope so!

Mama C- Do you have a route planned out? Just wondering since we live so close together... The worst part of the drive for me was the mountains. I get super carsick, so when I was driving alone the mountains were torture. But the stretch on 75 through Ohio, Kentucky, and Tenn. wasn't that bad, and once I hit 26 in SC (and was out of the mountains) I was good to go. haha.

Well, Ladies - I guess I can chime in on this subject.  I'm preparing to take my son's car to him in July.  Thankfully, the car is paid for - he was able to pay cash in full.  No, he had not been saving since he was a tike, but he received an inheritance from his dad's passing in 2000 when he turned 18 yrs. old and then again for the next several years.

B was very meticulous about his purchase.  He bought a 2006 Grand Prix -researched and really thought it out.  Hopefully this car will be around for a long time.  All he'll have to do now is pay for gas and insurance.

One thing ~ I'm not really looking forward to the road trip to get it there.  I've never driven more than 5 hours away, and I'm a bit apprehensive.  My daughter is coming along, but it's still a very long drive - at least 13 hrs.  (2 day trip for me!)

Anyone who has been to GC - Do you know if hotel shuttles run early?  Our flight leaves CHS at 5:30 a.m. to get back to Indiana.  We would have to be at the airport no later than 4:30 a.m.  Ugh!!

Any insight/help would be appreciated.  I still have several weeks to get things in order, but it's going to be a big trip for this Mama!

Ah, yes, cars.  My son is currently looking for a car, which he'll need once he's done with power school.  Fortunately, he's looking for something used, and he's been saving his money for something not too cheap, not too expensive.  We reminded him he has to also think about insurance and gas money, and he seems to have his head on straight about it.  I think it helps that he didn't get his license until he was 18, so he hasn't had the "car bug" about buying something earlier.

I recall one Navy mom mentioning that her son just had to buy himself a motorcycle once he got out of boot camp.  She wasn't happy about that, but he only had it about a month or so and then sold it.  She thinks he probably had one good wipeout and changed his mind about owning a motorcycle after that.  LOL

cars.  just can't win on that subject.  I bought my son an old Merc. Sable for about $3500. cash and insisted HIS name only was on the title.  I remember when he was younger, he got a ticket for parking incorrectly on a County road.  The car was parked and unoccupied, so the ticket was left under the windshield wiper under MY name, the legal owner.  My son didn't tell me about the ticket, tried to hide it, and then I got a letter telling me to pay it or a warrant would be issued for my arrest.  I feel better knowing the car is in his name now, but not completely relieved since I have his durable/med POA when he's deployed!!!  I think we're (hopefully) all getting wiser through these experiences.  Personally, I would never co-sign on a loan for any of my kids.  Either they can afford it, do without, or if I'm feeling benevolent and can afford to help, I might meet them half way.  None of my older 3 kids has ever owned a new car....

About cars!  My son had to go and buy a "souped" up Honda.  He loves cars and always has.  He actually wasted $26,000 on going to Nascar Tech when he graduated High School.  $20,000 of which "we" paid!!!  He floundered around after he got out.  Decided he didn't want to be an auto tech.  Worked in the local grocery store for a year before he decided he wanted to join the Navy.

Needless to say his Honda cost $8,000!  I tried to talk him into just getting a $3,000 car just to get around the base with.  Told him why buy an expensive car, to just leave it behind when he deploys.  But, nope, not gonna listen.  He has complained once about not having any money to do anything.  I told him now he is living for his car.  Just what I didn't want him to do.  I also told him I don't want to hear any complaints about not having money anymore.  He made the choice to buy it, so either sell it, or stop complaining and just make the payments.  He likes to bring it to the local tracks to race.  He probably won't have much free time for that now since Power School has started.  Thank Goodness!!!!!  His dad and I don't like that he does that.
