Oh, and yes, you can give him whatever you want at the airport. Anything he can fit in his seabag or the blackbag, he can take. Reminder: on most airlines military can get 2 or 3 checked bags free.

He won't be able to wear his civilian (or "normal") clothes until about a month after he starts classes, so that could be something you could ship (or bring) to him later on. :)

P.S. We love answering questions here, so ask away. :)

Navystepdad- Nothing is ever for certain... ever. My Nuke flew out on Tuesday morning. But I've been following the RTC Facebook page, and it seems as though they've changed their policies. ALL sailors will fly out on Saturday unless there's a ticket issue in which case they'll fly out Sunday or Monday. Which I have hard of some sailors flying out on Sunday. No one will be able to tell you for sure except your recruit, and even then it's always subject to change... Welcome to the Navy. ;)
And like Maddie said, just because they go to the airport at 3 or 4am doesn't mean they fly out then. Aaron's wasn't until 3:30pm...

Your communication with him should be picking up soon. I bet you'll start receiving much longer letters this week. :)

Hi Navystepdad!  There's a discussion specific to those with 6/10 PIR on the RTC's facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.navyformoms.com%2...

You may want to check them out and ask more questions there.  And your son will be able to tell you more about his flight out as his PIR draws near.  I didn't find out much from my kid until almost the week of the PIR.  As far the the time they head out to the airport, it has been many's experience that those who go out on Saturday leave in the wee hours of the morning for the airport.  They all get on the bus for the airport no matter what time they are to board their planes.  My boy, for instance, was at O'Hare at 3 or 4 AM but his flight was not until 4 that afternoon.  The nukes had separate flights and went one or two at a time; I guess they get to be the fillers in the planes since they get discounted military rates.  The black bag can be any kind of bag--back pack, duffle bag, etc. My son had an old black backpack with a red logo embroidery.  I just snapped off the logo and he had his all black bag.  It's not the "brand" that they care about, it's just that it has to be all black.  Apparently, there's an $8 all-black back pack at the NEX in GL if you want to pick it up there.  And yes, you can pack his laptop, cell phone and other electronics into it.  He won't be able to wear casual clothes at GC for at least a month so you may want to hold off on that.  After all, the bag is meant to be a carry on luggage so it has to be small enough to fit in the plane's carry on compartment.  USPS has a flat rate on the large box they have for the military--as long as it fits, they'll ship it for the same price.  So you can ship other things to him later as he needs them.

I would be surprised if the recruits for PIR 6/10 even know if they will be leaving on Sat.  They will probably find out in the next week or so.  But it can change at the last minute also.

Hello all !  I had a couple questions that you may be able to help me with. My stepson is ship 09 Division 201 PIR 06/10/11. He sent his girlfriend a letter last week letting everyone know he is ok but not alot of details, other than he passed his swimming but missed his pushups by 10 and crunches by 5. Anyway .... has anyone confirmed Nukes are heading out on Sat am? and has far as the " black bag"...is that any type of back back pack as long as it is not brand labled? And lastly we can pack his cell, laptop and other electronics into that as well as casual clothes? sorry for the bombardment of questions lol. Thanks

My son just commented that the New Balance tennis shoes were the worst shoes he's ever ran in.  Once he got his own shoes, he was able to fun faster and so much more comfortably.  I've still yet to see a pic of my son in his dress whites    : (

ditto on first purchases, colored boxer underwear & his own sneakers - also he said at boot camp the first night, etc they issued you shoes sizes based more on height & weight than actual size, both his sneakers & boots were the wrong size..

Well said Penny, and that is just what some of them needed.  An opportunity to work hard or pay a daily price for not pushing themselves.

I have not heard any complaints about "that guy" who never does homework and always get's 4 points :)

My son's first choice was EM and 2nd was MM - he is now MM in A-school and graduating this Friday.  It's difficult but if they spend time studying they will get through.  Even the ones that are on "vols" (voluntary study hours) spend time every day over in the study rooms - that's how they stay at the top and even with that, they work HARD to stay at the top!!

My son order some shoes online and had them sent to him at A school, he loves them, he also has purchased a bicycle, a tv/monitor, and a DS3... now that classes have started, he doesn't have time to do much but study.  Classes are very detailed, he told his Dad that they have given a semester's worth of information in 3 weeks so far and you really do have to study 2 or more hours per day to keep up. When he was in BC they do all kinds of testing on the SRs and the counselors will help the SRs choose the rate that they are suited to. We thought our Sailor would be EM, but the testing showed he was more suited for ET (I guess all that computer game playing put him into this category). He is really happy now that some Dungeon & Dragon games have begun with this class!
