Llovesmysailor - great info on the Nuke program, if anyone finds any good articles or books, please post.  I will be looking too, just can't get enough information!  I sure hope the attitude toward Nukes doesn't bleed over to the Moms and wives, I hope to stay connected on this site once my son leaves GC.

Congrats, William! Isn't that phone call after BattlsStations the greatest thing?! Your son hopefully will have a few days to unwind before plunging headfirst into nuke school classes. Good luck to him!

Hi everyone, my son will be graduating boot camp tomorrow and flying to Charleston on next Tuesday.   He is a ET candidate and I can confirm he is definitely a SN (Seaman) not Fireman and he has 3 white stripes on his uniform not the red ones.

EM & MM while they are an E-3 are FN, but ET's are SN.

He told me this yesterday, they just finished Battle Stations 21 and we got to chat for an hour.  They had just issued his chevrons to sew on his uniform so it was a topic of conversation.

Oh! I found the little part about the "FN" "SN" difference.

If your son is an EM or an MM, then the address will read "FN Last Name, First Name" If your son is an ET then the address will read "SN Last Name, First Name"

:)

Welcome, Pamela! Definitely check out the discussion in this group "Your sailor's schedule upon arrival at Goose Creek" There's tons of detailed information compiled there. :)

His address is simple, and it will basically stay the same throughout A school, T-Track, and Power School. It'll look something like this:

FN Last Name, First Name

Class: ####

101 NNPTC Circle

Goose Creek, SC 29445

The "FN" part will depend on your sailor's rate.. I know if your sailor will be an EM, it will say "FN" and I think ET's also say "FN" That would mean MM's would say "SN" Hopefully another mom can clear that part up.. I can't remember which is FN and which is SN.

ANYWAYS. :) Under the class part, you'll put "Indoc" until he classes up... then you'll put his class number. :)

As far as liberty goes, he will have liberty on weekends. There are certain restrictions, midnight curfew, must be in uniform at all times during Phase 1, cannot drive a vehicle during Phase 1, and cannot consume alcohol (no matter what age) during Phase 1. There's a thorough explanation of the Phases in that discussion I mentioned.. I'm going to bump it to the top so it's easier to find. :)

If you have any other questions, don't be afraid to ask. We're all here to help! :)

My son just arrived in GC yesterday.  He called from the airport.  Does anyone know how soon he will have his address?  He can't wait to get his cell phone.  Also, I'm tentatively planning on going down there on the 18th.  Will he have liberty right away?  Thank goodness my sister lives in MT. Pleasant and I will be able to make the 4 1/2 hour drive to see him often.  Any other new mom's out there?

LLovesmysailor - thanks for that info.  Very interesting and I will definately look into info about Rickover.

BTW, is would highly recommend that any Nuke Moms or Nuke wives read up on Adm Rickover and the establishment of the Nuclear Navy. It will explain a great deal and give you a better understanding of the culture of the Nuke rates.
Comment by LLovesmysailor on February 10, 2011 at 12:18am

My husband was a Nuke in the 1980's. One of the first thing I was told as a new Navy wife was that there are two Navys. There is the Navy and there is the Nuclear Navy. I was warned that there would always be issues  to deal with, it was just part of being a Nuc wife.

The admiral who established the nuclear Navy did not want any non-nuke ET, EM, or MM to our rank his nukes. So, he insisted that all his nukes get to the fleet as Petty Officers and its been that way ever since. Needless to say, it set up issues that exist to this day. His name was Admiral Hyman Rickover. For years,  Nuke Officers were refered to as Rickover's boys.

@Kris, in the Navy these days, it's up or out because of the over-manned situation. After 5 years, E3 probably means his chances of reupping has diminished while your son's future prospects are sky high. It's no secret that to get in to the nuke program, your ASVAB scores must be at the top of the heap in addition to being able to passed the highest level of security clearance. Your son probably didn't do anything wrong - he probably just answered his friend's inquiry as to his rating but his friend was probably put out nonetheless. It is just the way it is. Some of the nuke wives run into issues sometimes too.

When my son was in college, he ran into the same issues whenever he took a liberal arts class. The other students couldn't understand why the engineering students got all the "glory" and attention plus a beautiful building overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The job market is so tough that my son would not even talk about work at parties he went to during the holidays. You don't know what to say to one of your contemporaries with a college degree but still living at home.
