dramaboysmom-I don't know.  I got bronchitis from the crud my son brought home at Christmas and the only thing that worked was finally getting the antibiotics and codeine cough meeds.  I tried everything but every day would not feel better so finally broke down and went to the dr.  He may just need to go and get something and face it head on.  He'll probably feel better faster.  I also did the sinus wash at the same time and I think that helped with the awful congestion.

Heard from my son who is classed up now.  He had horrible bronchitis and refuses to go SIQ or LOB. He even called me for the "old fashioned-mom recommended, fast remedies".  Funny how all those years he suffered through "vicks on the chest and bottom of the feet, neti pot, sinus bags" and can't remember them now!

At this writing South Bend and points south are pretty much closed for tomorrow and probably Thursday.  I work as a computer tech at our HS, so WOooHoooO, Another day to rest and stay healthy.

All in the storms path, stay safe and warm.

I'm one excited Nuke mom.  Son just got his Dolphins yesterday.  Hopefully someone took a picture.  He is on a sub - so not a whole lot of communication.  I miss my Sunday evening calls from Goose Creek.  He reported to Groton last January so has taken right at a year to earn the Dolphins.  Good luck on the Nuke journey.  Only another Nuke mom (or girlfriend) can understand the ups and downs of A school, power school and prototype.  It sure does help to be able to come on here and ask questions or just vent.

Connie-foaling, my son did/has a 401k through a previous employer, they are nice because they can be accessed if needed <if the persons reponsible enough he'll use it only for emergencies and they do happen> (your penalized but not as bad), Roth's are almost untouchable - although thats probably the idea.   ANYWAY my 401k through my work is nice because I can "borrow" from it without being penalized - I take a loan from myself & I'm paying myself back with interest.

Thanks, everybody. You're right, might be a good idea to just hang onto the savings bonds ... over Christmas my son and I did the online bond calculator and they will collect interest for quite a long time yet. So .. he'll think of it as "found" money someday, maybe for a down payment on a house.

On a related topic, is anybody's sailor setting up a Roth IRA for the 1st time? My son is 18 and we're having our CPA do his taxes for 2010 since we need to claim him as a dependant (the CPA said to do that as long as his earnings incl. interest income were under $10k for the year, and he lived with us for more than 6 months of the year). Had to also file local tax return and pay township fee, last time for that! Anyway, I'm urging my son to put the maximum $5000 (from his summer savings plus sold his drum kit) into a Roth for 2010 and just let it compound away for 50 years. Being young and not seeing the Big Picture, he doesn't want to do that; I'm trying to convince him to save now, before he gets married, has kids, etc and money gets tight.

Kat, I can't claim him.  Last year was my last year for head of household and clamining him.  Or should I say 2009 taxes.  Now my refund life is probably all over.  I did stash as much as I could away in my 403b so I could lower my taxable income.  THis year will be an eye opener for sure.  However, other than sending him packages he is costing me nothing so that has been a real savings.  I think he is so proud of the choice he made to get this great education and not have it cost me or him anything but hard work.

I don't think there is any requirements for savings bonds.  they can be cashed for any thing.  our middle son used his to buy the DIL her engagement ring.

if your education fund is a 529 plan, you can use the funds for any type of higher education classes, with one stipulation that the courses must be through a school that is on the list for FAFSA.  I just checked into using the remaining 529 plan money for our middle son who wants to take classes to become a Certified Financial Planner.  But the school is not listed as qualilfies for 529 fund money. so we left the fund alone and grand kids will have some college money someday.

Elizabeth - I was a little worried about Turbo Tax, just because we expected my son to owe on taxes, so today I redid them on the free H & R block site for Federal EZ form and they came out exactly the same, so I think Turbo tax is fine.

Are you still claiming your son as a dependent? or is he now claiming himself?  we can still claim him for last year, so he doesn't get that benefit yet or he'd have a lot a good return.  OH well, at least he really doesn't owe like we thought he would.

Connie - you know, I am not sure about that tax stuff for the ESA and savings bonds.  I asked American Century Investments when I was trying to close the account (I actualy couldn't since the MIL was the custodial on it, so she had to) and they said it was the Unif. Tran. Min. Act of AZ so the earnings weren't taxed but the dividends were.  On the U.S. Savings bonds, I just don't know.  We probably should look on the IRS web site or send a message to ask that question and see what they say.  I am thinking about holding onto the savings bonds anyway so that down the road when the kids need a little help, are maybe struggling, etc., they will have that little bit to tide them over.
