@Gulf Coast Mom, Congratulations!!!! So awesome!!

@Drama, our son was really sick while in BC and never went got any treatment. He didn't want to be put back, he as he always called it, "chugged" along. He got through it, but it was hard on me at home. I wanted so bad to go and get him so that we could take care of him. He did get better over time. Then he got really sick on Christmas Eve while home on leave. He got married two days before and his new wife was up all night with him. She actually woke us up to let us know that he was sick and we helped where we could. He was still sick when they headed to GC and then the next week, Kelsey got sick and with Diego in class all day she was alone and that was really hard for us that we weren't there to take care of her. A mother's touch is always comforting when you are sick. Hoping he feels better soon!!!!

Thanks Mary.  Sent him ear candles yesterday. :-)   And I hope he sucks it up and just goes to medical today and gets it done.  But, alas, he IS 22 and of course knows FAR better than I about that.  ( but wait?  Wasn't it ME he called to whine about being sick and wanting to know what to do... ?  Ahh yes, it was...  will he take most of my advice... no way!)   Have a great day those of us that are snowed in.  And for those without power who probably won't read this for a couple days... my thoughts are with you... I could be next!

Good Morning Everyone: I received this, and wanted to pass it along to you:

I would like to ask each member of our organization to stop and pray over the next few days for those among us and those within our military that serve from the heart and strength of their faith, bringing spiritual and emotional care to those they serve.  Chaplains and others who serve in related capacities must place the well being, care, and needs of others before their own.  Ideals, beliefs, and standards must be adhered to at the highest level and the good of all must come before personal goals, gains, and satisfactions.

On February 3, 1943, four such Chaplains stationed aboard the USAT Dorchester, gave their lives as they sought to care for those they served.  With the ship they were on torpedoed and sinking, the Army lieutenants raced about assisting fellow soldiers, calming them, and getting them on to available lifeboats.  At one point, the jackets needed to save the lives of the soldiers ran out, and the four Chaplains took off their own and gave them to the others.  Many lives were saved by the heroic actions that came from the heart of their service to God, country, and fellow man.  As the ship sank and men looked back, they could see Rev. Clark V. Poling, Father John P. Washington, Rev. George L. Fox, and Rabbi Alexander D. Goode joining arms, singing hymns, and praying to the Almighty as they went to their death for a cause they considered greater than themselves.

Won't you pray over the next few days for strength for those serving in such a capacity?  Your prayers are deeply needed and appreciated.   You are a valuable part of the service that can be given.  Your support offers encouragement, builds determination, and promotes hope.  As with all we do, it is the team effort that brings success!

Prayers,
Rev. Lin McGee
National Chaplain

I wouldn't normally do this but I am so proud of my nephew.  He asked his mother to drive him 45 minutes so he could enter this contest and with a good portion of his winnings, $100. will be donated to sutism.  He picked the charity himself.  Please vote for him.  You can vote for him once a day.  Autism is such a worthy charity.  I wonder what provoked him to pick that one.  I hope he wins.  None of the other kids mentioned charities at all.  At least not the ones I listened to.

Please vote for my nephew Ian! Ian recently entered into a video contest asking to share his "strategy for saving money". He needs your vote as the child with the most votes wins! PLEASE LOG ON TO THIS WEBSITE DAILY FROM 2/1-2/14 AND VOTE FOR IAN FISCHER ONCE DAILY BY LOGGING ON TO:

That opportunity to withdraw $10K for down payment on a home penalty-free could be the deal-maker.  That's a great bennie, and covers one of the main reasons to tap a Roth like that. That could also put him in a position where he doesn't feel so compelled to re-enlist, if the main reason to do so would be to buy a home. It's nice to be in a position where you have options.

If you take your money out early from a roth you incur a 10% penalty. But...I found these exemptions:

Although the Roth IRA withdrawal penalties and taxes can appear quite high, there are several exemptions, and it's certainly worth being aware of what these are, since in all of these cases the early withdrawal penalty doesn't apply.

  • a) The IRA owner becomes disabled in a way considered to be serious. This is a limited definition, and full details of the disabilities allowed can be found in the IRS Code documentation.
  • b) If the owner dies, then the necessary closure and withdrawal of funds does not incur the penalty
  • c) If 'substantially equal periodic payments' have been made over the owner's life expectancy, the penalties are waived
  • d) If the distribution or withdrawal is used to pay for medical expenses which have not been reimbursed and do not exceed 7 and a half percent of the MAGI.
  • e) If the owner has been unemployed for more than twelve weeks, and has been receiving unemployment compensation in that time, then distributions can be made penalty free for the purpose of medical premiums.
  • f) A single penalty free distribution can be made for a first time home purchase, although this is limited to a maximum of $10,000 in any case.
  • g) Penalty free early distributions can be made to pay for qualified expenses in relation to higher education fees, applicable not only to the IRA owner but also certain family members
  • h) If the IRS places a levy against the Roth IRA, then any taxes due can be paid back using a penalty free early withdrawal.

Roth IRAs I thought were actually easier to tap because you had lready paid your tax on the money before it was invested.  Not really sure guess I could google it.

dramaboysmom-I don't know.  I got bronchitis from the crud my son brought home at Christmas and the only thing that worked was finally getting the antibiotics and codeine cough meeds.  I tried everything but every day would not feel better so finally broke down and went to the dr.  He may just need to go and get something and face it head on.  He'll probably feel better faster.  I also did the sinus wash at the same time and I think that helped with the awful congestion.

Heard from my son who is classed up now.  He had horrible bronchitis and refuses to go SIQ or LOB. He even called me for the "old fashioned-mom recommended, fast remedies".  Funny how all those years he suffered through "vicks on the chest and bottom of the feet, neti pot, sinus bags" and can't remember them now!

At this writing South Bend and points south are pretty much closed for tomorrow and probably Thursday.  I work as a computer tech at our HS, so WOooHoooO, Another day to rest and stay healthy.

All in the storms path, stay safe and warm.
