Michimom~ when in Jan does your son graduate A school? I wonder if he's in my son's class who is also an MM??
Too funny about everybody's snow or lack of snow. We got a bit less than an inch here, but maybe will get more. Last winter it seemed to miss us all the time--everyone just north and south of us got the bulk of it. Our sailor is hoping for a white Christmas!
Well, we skyped with our son last night, and he kind of razzed me, because I didn't get it right that when he graduates A school (in January), he'll be a petty officer 3rd class. I didn't think that was until after power school. So he said, "Mom, didn't you learn that from Navy for Moms! I thought you knew everything about the Navy now." Hey . . . I'm trying! LOL
my son is worried that the snow will melt before he gets here for Christmas -- he wants to go snowmobiling. I told him I don't think that will be a problem -- it's not going above freezing for the next week and it will be below zero every night.
wow..that's ALOT of snow!! We live inTN, and I live far enough south that we shouldn't get any---kinda BOO, but kinda Yay! too....I was born in Indiana and am used to the snow and know how to drive on it, but many people down here don't know how to drive in it, which makes it difficult! I do miss the snow in DEC though...and it VERY RARELY snows here in Dec....Some of TN (north of us) should get about an inch...our county is still under a WINTER STORM ADVISORY as of right now...funny, huh....you all be safe and warm up there and enjoy some of the snow for me! My son really likes being at GC, and I'm seeing some great ideas on this group and am kinda getting a feel for GC now. Can't wait to visit him next year!
Mary, I see you live in Des Moines. I grew up in Des Moines - went to Hoover. We now live in Minneapolis and YES it's snowing. It looks like we got about 6-8" last night and expecting another 8-10" today. We're at the high for the day of 20 and it is supposed to drop to 8 below tonight. brrrrrr
Penny - once they graduate prototype, they are assigned to a sub or ship. Not sure about ships, but on the sub, they they have to qualify different watch stations and systems on the particular sub they are on. It takes normally up to a year - they they get their dolphins. Until they have their dolphins, they basically have no free time. Either they are working, sleeping, eating or studying. Some of the checkoffs can only be done while the sub is underway. This summer we had the chance to go on the sub. There is a shadowbox mounted on the wall of one of the very narrow passageways. The dolphins are mounted along with the name of the sailor underneath - just waiting for them to qualify. It is a big celebration when they actually get the dolphins. My son is getting close - he is out now for just a couple weeks and thinks he may get them this trip. I am hoping and praying he does. Then he will have at least some time to read or watch a movie in his free time.
lol Darla, no, I didn't think of that snappy comeback - good one! I just said "we'll see" (and we all know what that really means)...
Hey, is anyone else's sailor traveling on the 18th to the west coast? SFO specifically?
Thanks, Darla. I didn't know that as I thought once they finished with A school, Power School and Prototype - they were good to go and sent out onto the carriers or submarines where they spent the next 4 years of their 6 year enlistment !! (Sounds simple, huh? lol)
Gulf Coast Mom - Can you explain what you mean by your statement :Now, he is almost qualified and ... will have some free time".
I'm mostly asking about the fact that he is almost qualified...what does that mean? If he graduated from Nuke school one year ago, what is required after that? Thanks for being patient, my son is in BC right now with a PIR of 1/28/11 and then on to Goose Creek.
Hey arronsgirl11, thank you for mentioning the sub moms group discussion on Kindles etc. We got a kindle for each of our sailors kids. Nate won't be on a sub for a yr or so, so he should be able to use it esp on the train home! I too researched the kindle and they have lots of older books to be downloaded for free.
One week from today and Nate will be on the train home and 1 wk and 2 days from now we will be on our way to see my sailor daughter, Lindsay, arrive in port. I hope Va won't be too cold then. Gramdma want's them to bring their uniforms home to w.pa for pics but Lindsay has had enough of uniforms. She can't wait to get off the ship and go shopping!
