Oh, one more thing Julsburd. When you get into the hall there will be signs with your division number on them. It was suggested that you sit slightly off to the right or left, on the bottom level but at the highest point so that you have a better view of things. If you sit to low you are looking at them head on and if your son is in the back, as mine was, you will never see him if you aren't up a little bit. We got clear up against the wall, which my daughter said hurt her back because she had to sit up straight the whole time, so maybe go down a row or two for comfort.
Our son had to go back to his compartment for a uniform inspection after the ceremony, so we saw him for a few minutes, then he left and we had to stand around waiting for over an hour before he came back and we could take him out. There is no where to sit once you are out of the hall, so wear comfy shoes for long standing, just in case. You may walk over to the NEX or go into the museum, which is right there, unless of course he is able to leave right away.
So exciting. have fun.

Julsburd, don't forget tissues and waterproof mascara!

Julsburd - have fun. I get goosebumps thinking about PIR and what a special day that was. What you are planning on wearing is fine. No one will notice what you are wearing and even jeans are acceptable. It wasn't cold in the hall when we had PIR on Nov. 5, but the temp was in the 40's then. We got there around 6:30 a.m. and it wasn't cold inside at all. Someone suggested taking a towel or blanket to sit on as the bleachers are metal and could be cold. We didn't but had our coats that we ended up taking off.
Have a great time.

Good morning all! Well we leave for PIR tomorrow afternoon and I just looked at the weather. It sounds great for Chicago... sunny, high of 31 and only a 5mph wind! I used to live around there and that is a stellar day for December! Anyway, I am planning to wear black corduroy pants with a nice sweater. Is that appropriate? I want to look nice but I also want to be warm and comfortable for walking around.

After reading the latest posts on things to send to GC it sounds like sending them off to college all over again. My son went to Purdue for 2 years so we have all of his "stuff" in our basement so I'm going to go through them and pull out the staplers, bandaids etc. and get it back to him. I appreciate all the tips in fact I keep a word doc going on my desktop where I copy and paste all of your important tips so I won't forget them. A lot of this page made it into "my highlights"! :)

As far as packing goes for PIR based on what I have learned from all of you I am taking a black backpack with his phone, ipod, laptop, and various chargers to hand to him at the airport Saturday morning and then I am taking a my ribbons I ordered from the ribbon lady, Tide Stick, camera and parking pass along with my clothes. Am I forgetting anything? We don't have binoculars so I don't think I'll have those.

I have more questions--do their addresses change when they move to a different room?-I don't know if it's in the same building. Do their class numbers stay the same through all the phases?

Tnnavymom-My MM graduated A school 11/5 and is also on T-track to start class in mid January--He said they finish in June--?

Does anyone know if the kids can have a small Christmas tree in their rooms? I'd like to send one to my son along with his gifts.

They do still have room inspections so when I sent the snack items the first time I sent them in a plastic container so they could be kept together in the storage cabinet. I also sent the plastic school box with things like Kat is getting together - don't forget some needles and thread for those emergencies. I will never forget the 1st inspection my son had in boot camp - the only points he had taken off were for lint on his glasses (from the paper towels in the bathroom). After that, I sent several of the tissue paper type wipes flattened out in some of the letters and cards I sent. I'm missing getting to send stuff now - they don't get stuff on the sub unless it is a long deployment. The longest he was out was 8 weeks, and they did not do a mail drop.

One thing I remember about A school was my son missing meals because he was in mandatory study hall or something.

good advice Gulf Coast Mom. I am also putting together a kit with safety pins, paper clips, a tiny stapler, scotch tape, manicure set, antibacterial wipes, etc. so that he has all those little things on hand. I went to the dollar store and got a bunch of stuff so not very expensive to do.
Will have to get that bowl, mug and fork and spoon for him too.

It seems like I have been on here forever. My son graduated prototype last Dec. and is now serving on a sub out of Groton. I see there is a lot of new moms on. Many of us want to send a care package once they get to Goose Creek. Here are a few ideas: they will have a microwave and small frig in their rooms. Send a microwavable mug and bowl along with some snack/breakfast foods - easy mac, ramen noodles, oatmeal, poptarts, coffee, hot chocolate, etc.
I also used one of the plastic school boxes and filled it with some acetaminophen, OTC cold med, cough drops, immodium, bandaids, antibiotic ointment, etc, so if he had a headache or needed a bandaid, he would have it. The galley closes pretty early and after mandatory study, they will want a snack. The Subway gift cards are a good idea as well as the NEX. Take time to look at the $4.95 option for the gift cards. There is a huge selection of cards available, you can change the print, put your own message in, etc. It is a long road - keep sending cards, e-mails, texts, even if you don't get a reply or get to talk to them as often as you would like. My son did well, but went in to study even when not required. He did usually take at least one of the weekend days to play - go to the beach or into Charleston. Ask any questions - someone will be along before long with the answer.
