Hi John'smom....About the wisdom teeth. You and he are so lucky he got them out before he went. I couldn't sleep after hearing my son would have them pulled without being able to go under or have a great deal of down time and good meds after. I think I completely over thought or emotionalized that one. I personally hate dental work and so does his older sister. We both had ours out and developed issues later on etc. that made it horrible. I kept thinking of him having it done by a stranger and being wake and then laying in a small hard bed and being yelled at. I hated every day until he called and said it wasn't so bad and that he got light duty and vicodin. He made it sound like it was just a bump in the road. It was a bump I wish I hadn't gone through.

He graduated A school over a month ago and has been on T-track which is hold before Power School. Or is it prototype....to late to check my notes. Someone will know. He said A school was hard but there is a lot of support. He had a small room with one other guy. As soon as he graduated he moved to a much nicer room. At first he was eating out most of the time. Now he tries to save more money buy eating on the Navy. He has heard the schools get progressively harder. He is finding T-track to be a good break. He doesn't wear glasses so I can't comment on that one.

Looking back on Boot Camp I am beginning to think it was like a big Fraternity for my son. He never really complained about it in his letters or when we saw him at PIR. I think he saw it as a test he passed and he was proud he did. I think then going on to A school with a bunch of the guys has really bound him to something bigger than himself or our little family of three. It's really just him and me and his sister. He lost his Dad at 14. He needed more men in his life.

Kat, did you go to PIR and was your son a grad-N-go or how long after BC did he go on to SC?
Comment by Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke on November 30, 2010 at 3:45pm
Hi everybody, well I finally got caught up on everybody's great wisdom and advice. Thanks so much. Just for the record ... John has already had his wisdom teeth pulled. Thanks goodness!! I did get his "box" yesterday and everything was included except his glasses - guess he'll get to wear his civilian ones for a few more days. Does anybody know at what point we can send them back for use with PIR or do you just bring them with you and hope you can hand them off somewhere along the way? It's a shame they have the BCGs for the nice formal pics taken at week 4 or do most kids just go without any glasses? Anybody know?

By the way, the thong and the graduation dress - now that was priceless.

Went out to check on graduation dates for my son and it appears that it won't be the 21st; I understand that with him being there over Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years, those are all holidays that they tack onto the end of their time and ends up keeping them there for an additional week! UGH

For any of you who have kids already in Nuke school, how are the kids finding it? Difficult, emotionally draining, etc? Do they like the dorms, anything you can share I would appreciate it. You can also email me at pennyndoug@comcast.net.

Thanks so much! You guys (okay, I'm from the midwest) are so much appreciated and a true God-send.

I am going to have to come up with something just as good as the thong thing to keep us all laughing. Who knew i'd mention that and we all had such similar experiences? See, we are all more alike than we are different. too funny.
Thanks for checking on the info. for the NEX gift cards. That is great and will be a wonderful gift idea.

Penny, we all feel your anxiety, sadness, loneliness, but we are also here to tell you that before you know it, bootcamp will be over and you will be looking back saying where did the time go. There is just nothing else like the worry you feel when your child goes away like this and you know they are getting "whooped". But, they will endure and be stronger for it. And so will you. My son actually told me the other day that he misses bootcamp, and he's only been out of it for just over 3 weeks now. He said looking back it wasn't as bad as it seemed at the time, and he now likes how they had every minute of every day planned and they had no time to think of anything else. He says now there are too many distractions and he has to be in control of his own schedule, well at least the when to go to bed, when to get up, when to eat, when to study. I just think it's funny that he'd say he misses boot camp. Who'd have thought?
Definately get involved with your son's PIR forum, and his division once you get the information telling you those details. You will laugh and cry together with other moms, and sometimes dads and husbands, and make some really great friends who you will end up meeting at PIR.
We didn't get the first real letter from our son until about the third week. He got to bootcamp on Sept. 13 and his first call came on Oct. 5. He never got to call again until after Battlestations, which was the day before PIR, and we were on the plane on the way there so got his message once we landed.
The mailman stalking is a true thing. I think we all did it. In fact, I even told our mailman about it. He got a good laugh but said he'd for sure not mess with me on Wed. or Thurs. when the letter should be here.
Just so you know, your son may have to get some wisdom teeth removed. My son said about 80% of his division of 85 guys had teeth removed. That was during the first two weeks.
Definately ask us all any questions you have along the way. One of us will know an answer. Hang in there. It will get better.

Hi PollyAnna...I just rechecked the gift card at the New online site and you are right. I was quick to read it at work yesterday and didn't see that the card price I was seeing was for a customized card. I think 1.75 is much more reasonable and I wasn't taking into consideration the fact that they don't charge tax. A good point. I was only comparing it to giving him cash or a card. Tax in my area is 9% to 9.75% and when you make a big purchase it really hits you just how much that adds up. I have been wanting a bigger screen tv and just about a month ago I bought one. I had to pay 9.5% tax and then a $25.00 ewaste fee on top of that. It made me realize I should have bought it online at Circuit City and paid no tax and no fee. Of course I feel unpatriotic no supporting taxes and the ewaste fee should help with the disposal however, I am just tainted enough to feel a lot of that ewaste money is misused. Thanks for setting me straight on the Nex card. I think I will use that every once in a while instead of cash or Subway cards.

Penny, The box... :( Hang in there.

My thong to flip flop transition was about 12 yrs ago. I told my daughter to get thongs (not a thong) to match her 8th grade graduation dress... she thought I was pretty cool. And when she showed me the thong she found, my face said it all :)

PollyAnna, I like your comment about how our young military men stand out, even when not in uniform. I work with a former Marine, and he said he caught himself "standing at attention"--with his arms to his sides and fingers curled up--sometimes when, for example, posing for pictures, or something like that. He was just so used to it it became second nature.

My son said he will be happy to not be traveling in uniform when he comes home for Christmas. When he last came home, he had to travel in uniform, and he didn't really like how everyone was looking at him. He's very reserved and likes to blend in. And he said this even though he got bumped up to first class when in uniform! So funny.

Hi everyone, my son just joined BC in GL and when done is destined for Nuke school. At this point, have not heard when he will have PIR as I just received "the box" today. Still very new and very emotional ... would love to hear from other moms out there that have their sons/daughters already in Nuke school and how it is for them thus far. Thanks!

And all of this started with "soda" or "pop". Loving it.
It's nice to have a little light humor here and there.

Diana I missed your comment the first time around!
You just made my night ten times brighter. Thank you. :)
I'm not sure what I'd do without my boy.. And at this point in time, I'm not sure he knows what he'd do without me. :)
