Well, I am from Michigan and for the past 30 something years, it has always been called "soda." My ex-husband was in the Army stationed at Fort Ord, CA and I started it there and brought it home and have never used the word, "pop." People wonder what I am talking about unless I say "Coke" then they know. I was at a wedding reception once and I went to the bar and asked what kind of "soda" did they have and the guy looked at me if I were nuts! I laughed and asked for a "Coke" and he gave it to me. I had to explain what I meant and then he too laughed. But, it will always be "Soda" for me.

Wow, I'm with you Elizabeth. don't want to pay extra for a gift card.
In fact, I have a bunch of web sites where i go and buy discounted gift cards. Already got him a couple Best Buy cards at a 5% discount. Not a lot on that one but it all adds up. I even got Starbuck's the other day for 9% discount. I get AMC movie theater cards for 14%-20% discounts, and many more.
The Subway cards are always sold out when i check on them though.
Does anyone know of any other restaurants that are faily close to base that we could get discounts for?

Hey, we call it pop here in Michigan!

Hi all, Wow, they charge $4.95 for a gift card at the Nex! I buy Subway gift cards at work. (I Direct a Preschool/Afterschool) We sell the cards as a fundraiser. The school gets 3% profit from Subway cards. If any of you have contact with a non-profit; school, church etc. your gift card purchases could actually make money not cost money. I sound like I'm preaching right now. I'm not, I'm just so cheap. Everytime I go to send him something I think about the postage etc. and then I end up just wanting to send him a Subway card. I have made cookies and so has my Mom and mailed them to him. The logistics of paying for Priority Mail and then seeing it takes over two weeks for him to actually get it is getting pretty frustrating. Then he comments about how he is cutting out all the sweets and eating fish and vegetables and protein drinks. I'm sure it's just a phase but it's just so typical that it would happen right after we mail him treats!!! One thing I know for sure is he is eating at SUBWAY!!

I grew up in Southern California, but my parents were from Ohio and Nebraska. We always said Pop. Then we moved to Oregon when I was 10 and somehow pop became soda and now that's what I call it.
Remember when we used to call those cheap, little rubber flip flops "thongs?"
At least we did when i was a kid. My daughter about died when i called them thongs one day. thought I was talking about those rubber bands they call underwear. LOL.

I'm from Iowa and we say "pop" -- they say "pop" in MN also. But my DH kept talking about rubber binders and I had no idea what that was (rubber band).
Comment by Colleen in PA on November 29, 2010 at 8:19pm
Hey aaronsgirl11, sombody besides me says "pop"! It is refreshing to hear that instead of soda. Do you say gumbands instead of rubberbands? I am from W. PA and live in S. Cental Pa now and I know you are in OH so I guess we speak the same language! I heard a lot of different ways of saying things when my husband was in the Navy.

fyi - there are a bunch of coupons on ebay for Subway -- b1 g1 free sandwiches, etc.

Thanks for the link Nicole. That will serve a lot of us I bet.

Nicole, thanks for the link.
aaronsgirl, I have a Walmart crock pot, works great other than the lid rocks when there's steam on "high" setting. Cleans up easy. Can cook a pot roast in it, there's lots of room.
Kat, I have to sneak my goodie boxes to the post office, because my husband says "don't be sending him money and food, he's making a bigger paycheck than we are!" Oh, such drama. I'm like you, I slip in a $20 each week so he can go to Subway. I'd be doing the same thing if he had gone to college instead, I collect stuff (newspaper clippings, cartoons) for the weekly box, then add a magazine or two (National Geographic, I tell him to leave it in the lounge for the other guys when he's done). He's 18 but he's still my baby boy!
