my son didn't sign up for adopt a sailor because he was supposed to still be on watch. he ended watch 4 days early, so he could have gone somewhere if he'd known.

Sorry, I actually haven't heard if GC is having a special meal for our sailors. I would think so though. My son did take my advice and he signed up for the adopt a sailor program so he and another guy in his class are now at a petty officer's house for dinner. I'm really glad they did it. Hopefully it will be a nice social outing for both of them.

has anyone heard if GC has a special meal for our sailors? I saw the menu for GL and the recruits in boot camp are having a feast.

Julsburd - Congratulations! I know what a relief it was when our son finally passed Battlestations.

Oh, that would be great to experience, Pat!

Hey Julsburd, I just had a thought!! I am going to the VFW tomorrow to help feed 200 recruits from Great Lakes. I have heard that the recruits close to PIR are the ones they send for dinner. Do you think that your son might be going to the Villa Park VFW?? Several other N4M's are going to volunteer too. We are going to bring our phones so the recruits can call home. Oh, I hope he's one of the recruits!!!!!
Comment by Denise (MMNuke 1104-7) on November 24, 2010 at 10:53pm
Julsburd, congratulations on getting through boot camp. Those 8 weeks were an emotional ride. I too, get emotional thinking about PIR and finally getting to reconnect with my son. Good news is my blood pressure came down once he was through boot camp. I actually noticed I started breathing again the weekend of PIR. Is it possible to hold your breath for 8 weeks?

foaling-lady is right on with her advice. Recruiters sell the program with the perks of bonuses, civilian jobs later on, the education status..but reality is it is the most challenging school in the Navy and very stressful. My son is in A school, about week 3 and starting to show the stress. He has a great attitude and loves that the Navy "rewards him for being smart."

Thanks to all for the comments. I enjoy reading them and knowing that my emotions are validated by others.

Ah, I still get a little teary eyed thinking about PIR.
I didn't get teary at the ceremony until the end when the said "Liberty Caaaalllllll". Now THAT was a special moment, for a lot of reasons. Enjoy every second of it Julsburd.
