Hi all. I haven't been on here long (my sailor son just PIR'd 11/5), just wanted to say I've updated my name and photo.
Have a great day!

Dor- Giblets? Since a mom was doing the turkey I didn't even get into giblets!!! You're right about the grinder too!!! My hubby got me an old fashioned crank grinder. I may have to get them one for Christmas!! You gave me a great idea!

Dor - I can relate to the recipe "exchange". My sailor is married so some of the couples are getting together at one house and everyone bringing dishes. One of the sailors parents are coming down so they'll have a mom handle the turkey.

I had to email recipes for cornbread, gravy, dressing, and pumpkin pie. My son loves to cook and my precious DIL is learning. I'm a "southern" cook and most of what I prepare is by sight and taste so I hope what they prepare tastes okay. Would LOVE to be a fly on the wall in their kitchen!!

Skype is a life saver! Aaron and I try to get in a call every night, and it lets us have a chance in the day to talk, face to face.
My mom wasn't really concerned with Skype.. Until she became a grandma. :) With the grandkiddies 8 hours away, she's learned how wonderful it is just to see them.
My niece tried to hug me through the computer one night. Cutest thing ever, but broke my hear just a little. :)

Kat and Julsburd, so nice to hear about therapeutic riding volunteers. We've sold horses that were used in such programs, real "steady eddy" types, and as a former newspaper writer, I've done stories on the programs ... unbelievable how being on or around a horse can transform a child. Pass the word on to your friends; these programs can always use Christmas presents like lead ropes, halters, brushes, buckets, and of course, money to pay for hay and feed. Our farm is nearly all Thoroughbreds, we are a foaling facility so we also take in warmbloods, Arabians, and the occasional QH, Paint, Welsh, etc. It's breaking my heart to see this particular mare struggling to hold on to her pregnancy, she is my husband's personal mare (he raced her before retiring her to the broodmare band his past spring) and it doesn't look good for her right now.

Kat, you asked when my son had PIR, 11/12, a week after yours. He isn't expecting to start class until the beginning of December, so another week or two. He told me yesterday that he was going to a host family for Thanksgiving. I was very glad to hear how well he is getting taken care of by the Navy and the supporting community. I appreciate the information on the number of students in an MM class. I know that his PIR had over 30 Nukes, but not all were going MM.

Julsburd - at Horses Help my daughter doesn't get to ride a horse while she is leading a rider in a lesson. she walks in front of the horse and leads and there is a side walker on one side, in case the rider should fall, and a therapeutic riding instructor on the other side, giving the lesson. so 3 people are always with the rider. She also did horse exercising during the summer, but it was more lunging than riding.
i think it is so important to volunteer and doing it in a way that is helping people with special needs, AND includes horses, well that is just perfect for her.

Kat, that sounds like exactly what they have planned for me to do at the barn. I hope to be able to lead their trail rides also but they have to "train" me first. I hope these old bones can still ride... Even though I am so glad my son has joined the Navy its going to be hard to get used to the holidays and not having him here for them. He's 22 and we have never spent a Thanksgiving or Christmas apart. This year my husband will be driving to Chicago to take him out for the day but I can't go. I think he will have leave over Christmas so that will be great. Next year I'll be posting like you guys, wondering where he'll be getting his Thanksgiving turkey!
