yes, my son will be coming home for Christmas too, so it won't kill him to have to be gone for Thanksgiving. He hasn't been gone all that long anyway since he left for bootcamp on Sept 13.
I bet the mess hall will have a great Thanksgiving feast. I always heard that the Navy has the best food out of all branches of the service and I'm sure they would provide for those who won't be going home. i told my son it's just a day, so don't let that get you down. Find something to do, like go out to eat, or maybe he will be going to someone's home for dinner, then before you know it the day will be over and Black Friday will be here and you can be very thankful you aren't still working in retail and having to work that day.

Julsburd - my 16 year old daughter volunteers at a therapeutic riding stable here in Phoenix. She is a horse handler, which means she leads the horse during the lessons. She has to tack up and un tack and control the horse for the rider. She also volunteered all summer, since they didn't have lessons because it is way too hot, mucking stalls and feeding. She loves being over there and helping out. Thank goodness it's only 2 miles from our house.

Foaling lady... what kind of horses do you have? I am a big horse lover, owned one but had to put her down because she broke her hock... It was my mid life crisis when my last "baby" left home for college! I just love being around them. I am starting a volunteer job at a riding center north of town to help with barn stuff and with their special needs riding program. Can't wait to smell the manure again!

Talked to my son tonight. He is being "adopted" by a local family for Thanksgiving dinner, along with one of the other nukes. He believes the family includes retired or former Navy, plus three kids in the Navy! He is looking forward to being with a family for the holiday, even if it isn't his own.

Kat, that makes me feel better, I had visions of my son all alone (poor baby) with nothing to eat for Thanksgiving dinner but vending machine crackers! My husband was going to drive down (14 hours each way) but it'll be raining and besides, we have a pregnant mare who's trying to drop twin foals 5 months ahead of time, so I'm glad to have him home in case things get ugly in the next few days. Our son will be home for Christmas leave in just three weeks, and he'll get to see all of the relatives then, so he'll be ok on his own this holiday. I just hope the mess hall knows how to make green bean casserole (heavy on the crispy fried onion topping, please) and cranberry jello mold with walnuts!!!

That is nice he wants to cook, I would take that as a compliment, that he wants to replicate your dinner!

Oh, I didn't send mine any goodies for thanksgiving. I sent him money so he can go out and get some goodies though.:)
Comment by Kat (MM Nuke) on November 22, 2010 at 9:49pm
yes, josie, that's what mine had too, indoc. last week. Wow, your son wanted MM but was told no? I wonder how all that works. i just know that in bootcamp is when they put in for what they wanted and one of the letters I got said "yay, I got the job I wanted."
Julsburd - I would assume your son would have a week of indoctrination, just like ours had last week. My son didn't head to S.C. until the Wed. after PIR, so that was on Nov. 10 that he went there, then off for Veteran's day, then i'm not sure what was on Friday, then last week was PT, PFA, uniform inspections, a lot of classes to sit through that explained the program, told them about their benefits and all. Kind of like a new employee orientation. So I would think he wouldn't start classes on monday because there's a lot to go over first.

Foaling lady - my son will be there too, as will probably most of those who just got there in the last couple of weeks, unless their families are pretty close by. We are in Phoenix so there is no way. he did sign up for that adopt a sailor program but hasn't heard yet about if he gets to have dinner at someone's house.

My son heads to A school on Saturday after his PIR on Friday. He will be training as an ET. I was just wondering whether he can plan to start right away on Monday or do they usually wait for a full class to show up? What do they do if they don't start classes right away?

Just checking, is the mess hall definitely serving Thanksgiving chow on Thursday? My son will be one of the few sailors staying ... his roommate is flying home, most of his classmates are driving/flying home. I sent a care package of goodies that should arrive by Wednesday, but it's not the same as turkey w/ all the trimmings!
