That sounds good. I may recommend that he get the credit union account too.
My son has his own cell phone account. He got tired of me knowing what he was doing, ha, so he opened his own. Oh well, I guess it helps establish his credit, right? He just pays it online so I don't have to worry about paying things for him. But, he is still on our car insurance and i need to figure out what to do about that. Our insurance guy at Allstate said that if we drop him and he doesn't have any insurance for a while, when he goes to get a new policy they will treat him as if he never had insurance before and his rates will be higher for a while. Now our daughter is turning 16 tomorrow and will want her license soon, and I sure can't carry two of them on our policy, so i've got to find out what to do about that. he doesn't have his truck back there yet, and probably won't until next summer. Just have to see what happens with that.

I've recomended my son get a Navy Credit Account so when he sails he might not have any trouble so he has opened one but is keeping most of his money in his local account here as I am a signer and can pay things for him if he needs me too plus I can easily transfer funds to my account to pay his phone bill (part of my family plan).

yes, my son is using his debit/visa card too. I'm just glad to know the bank was looking out for him. Our credit card companies have called us before to verify that we were the ones making the charges too. It does feel good to know they are looking at it and keeping a watch, to some degree.

My son has a local Northern California bank (with our local address) and has never had any trouble. He has spent a lot of money and has never had any problem but he does use a Debit Card w/Visa logo and not checks. Our bank has never questioned any of his purchases. But then he has had the account for 5 or more years.

Julsburd - I know what you mean about it being a personal preferrence. I was a little worried about that too, but got it and took it to PIR with us and figured we could bring it back and return it to Costco if it wasn't what he needed. He was actually very pleased with it, then when he found out the other guys had been buying them at the NEX and they were basically the same thing, it turned out great. It is definately a great gift idea. Heck, who has watches these days? Especially the younger generation?

Just FYI - if any of your sons/daughters etc. have bank accounts other than with the Navy Credit Union (my son has Wells Fargo because he was told he could open it here in Phoenix before he went and they have Branches all over), have them be sure to change their address to reflect that they are living in South Carolina. We got a notice today on his account suspecting fraud because he had been buying a lot of stuff and they knew he didn't live there. I informed him tonight and he said yep, they had already frozen his account so he had to call them and get it straightened out and reflect his new address so they wouldn't suspect fraud. Good to know they were watching out for his account though.

Thanks for the advice Kat. I think we'll browse the NEX when we go for PIR and he finds one he likes we may get it as an early Christmas present and then keep it with his cell phone etc. and bring it to him at the airport. The more I think about this the more I'm certain he will want a watch. Being on time seems to be a pretty important thing in the Navy. Our oldest son is a pilot and he bought himself this very specific watch for pilots so I am gun shy about just picking one out for him. Its a fairly personal preference.

Hi there. About the watches. We got our son a watch for a PIR gift, because we knew he needed it. It has a silver band on it, and is waterproof, atomic, solar powered, has 5 alarms, and more. Got it at Costco. It was just under $60. He loves it and said a lot of the guys got them over the PIR weekend from the NEX and they were about the same as his but had black bands and cost around $100. After I read the previous post about the black band being required, I quickly sent him a message on facebook and asked if his watch was o.k. or if he's been told not to wear it. He said he wears it every day, all day, in plain site and no one has ever said he couldn't wear it. Gosh I hope it's o.k. So, I guess double check about the band thing before getting him a watch.

My son also has used his cell phone as his watch. He want a cool "Military" diving watch. He got his at the NEX.

Hi everyone! I am reading everything with interest. Thanks! Question for you... it seems our son will need a watch when he goes to A school since he won't be able to keep his cell phone with him (that's been his watch for a number of years). Are there "cool" watches that your Nuke's have asked for? Its Christmas time and we would like to get him one but we're thinking there is the "right one".
Comment by Linda (navynucmom) on November 20, 2010 at 1:24pm
I guess I'll just wait til I talk to him on Thanksgiving and see what he wants to do. He is G&G on Saturday, so I guess he could buy a phone on Friday when he's with us, then give it to him at the airport on Saturday. Thanks for all the info on the laptop.
