Yes, if he brings his laptop, he will be able to use it. Wireless is available, but he'll have to set it up first. The internet service is provided through Comcast, and he can have it set up so a monthly payment is taken out of his paycheck. It may take a few days (3-5 or less) for the internet to kick in though. There's also computers they can use at a recreation center type thing where internet is available if he doesn't have his laptop right away.
As far as cell phone goes... I don't think the NEX on GL sells cell phones. Getting his own service isn't a bad idea. He may want to do a little research on what works best down in GC. Verizon isn't terrible, but when he's in the barracks our calls get dropped and texts don't always go through. My advice is for him to wait until he gets to GC to get a phone. They have a shuttle service that goes from base to the mall, so just about every sailor hits the mall and best buy their first weekend there. At the mall he could probably find just about any service he wanted and could have the phone right away. You could also do this in GL while he's on liberty...
HOWEVER: Absolutely none of this stuff can be taken back to his barracks at boot camp with him. Absolutely none. If he buys anything: dvds, video games, cell phone, computer, reading material, etc., you must keep it for him when he goes back to base at night. If the RDCs find it, they will take it. The only exception is if he wants to buy a watch. That's about the only thing they're allowed to take back with him.
You can, however, bring him his stuff to the airport when he leaves if you're there at that point. I know a lot of Grad n' Go parents do that, and some will even stay until Tuesday or whenever their sailor will fly out. You can meet him at the airport (he'll be bussed there around 2 or 3 am even if his flight doesn't leave until 4pm), and give him his stuff. As soon as he's off of RTC, he's a free man... Well, almost. :)

Dor - thanks so much and I will go back a few pages to read about the cell phones.

to all you moms who have sailors in nuke A school, my son has PIR 12/3 and just wondering...if he brings his lap top, will he be able to use it? do they have wireless there? does anyone know if the NEX sells cell phones? he wants to get his own service, but I want him to have a cell phone ASAP, so trying to figure out if I should get him one and bring to PIR for him (he leaves on Saturday and we will meet him at airport) or just wait for him to get to GC and get his own. So hard without being able to communicate at this point. And is there anything else specifically that he NEEDS at A school?

elizabeth- I don't think Aaron minds it. However, when his roommate bought a new Xbox and never left the room, it drove Aaron nuts. But that only lasted a few weeks. :)

MomslilNuke- Aaron had the same problem... If he has friends with cars, he may ask one of them to take him. That's what Aaron did. One of his buddies (who was in the same position as he was a few months ago) took him around a few places. The day after Aaron bought his car, he returned the favor to another buddy so he could buy a car. If your son isn't sure of who would be willing to take him, if he posts on Facebook that he wants to buy a car, but needs help going places, I bet he'd be surprised to find the responses he gets. :)

aaronsgirl11 my son has had the identical experience of Aaron. He has a room mate and two Suite mates. He's social and I think he prefers it. His roommate is easy to get along with.

Does anyone know if their is any public transportation other then a cab around the Goose Creek/Charelston area. My son just made phasse 2 and is trying to buy a car. He is being very stubborn on what he wants, but is limited on the distance he can travel! So if anyone has any advice I can pass along, it would be appreciated. Thanks

Not every Petty Officer Third Class gets to move to a single room. Yes, Aaron did move, but still has a roommate (and two suite mates). It doesn't really bother him.. He actually ended up with the same roommate he's had since May, so it was nice that he didn't have to start all over with the roommate process.
The moving process was a pain.. just because he spent two or three days walking back and forth to carry all his stuff to his new building/room. And then he was living in two rooms for a few days. But he does have more space in his room now. No more bunk beds and tons more floor space! :)

When your sailor graduates "A" school, they become Petty Officer Third Class and move to a single room.

my son finished A school in October and he was assigned to a new room (I don't know if all A school grads move to new rooms) and moved over the weekend.
