About leave. My son first was told from the 17th to January 2. (I bought tickets) Then he was told he would have either 5 or 10 days. With the five day shift not including Christmas or for him his 21st birthday which is on Dec. 23rd. The ten day leave would include Christmas. He got lucky and pulled this one. (I changed ticket return date.) He called yesterday and said he was going to have to change his leave time on Friday the 17th because it was too early. He thought he would be able to leave on the same flight he left on when he got leave after graduating A school. He was wrong. He called himself this time and after a lot of time, different airline reps. he made the change and had the fee waived for the second time!!! What I have learned from this and I only hope he has is....don't make reservations too early and not without a commanding officer putting the information in writing.

Kat - Your son should have Christmas off from Dec. 17 (end of day) until Jan. 2 (around noon). They do allow new sailors to go into the hole on leave during this holiday as well. He shouldn't have watch or anything either. I think the sailors with watch have at least finished A school from what my son has told me.

LindaK, Is there a process for the nukes to inform the command at Goose Creek about the apt complex so nukes can avoid them in the future? I thought I read in an earlier post that the command at Ballston Spa keeps a list of landlords/properties to avoid.

wow, glad you don't have a brain tumor. That is very scary. Just glad you are o.k.

Spent most of the night last night in the ER at the VA hospital. I am happy to know that I dont have a brain tumor, even though I went because I am afraid I am getting another ulcer!

Chris Mom, My son had a great apartment. Brand new. Management very helpful. Military discount on the rent. Only one little problem, can't ask my son the name of the complex because he is out under the sea somewhere. But I could give you the address and maybe use GPS or mapquest to find it.

wow, we should start a forum for these rental tips. it would be good to know down the road for all of us.

well, my son just got to Goose Creek last Wed. and still doesn't know anything about coming home for Christmas. The airfares keep going up and it's expensive to fly to Phoenix during the holiday and during the winter because everyone wants to come here. He may have to stay there for Christmas. that would be such a bummer.
we just spent a small fortune flying back for PIR and all so he needs to pay his airfare, but it is getting pretty high.
anyone else having them stay there for Christmas?

Thanksgiving Dinner: when I was active duty, the chow halls always went way out of their way to create a wonderful holiday atmosphere with elaborate traditional dinners. I would think that would still be the case.

Blankets: using two different fleece fabrics (print and solid) is no problem as long as you match up the selvege edges. You will be able to tell after you have cut them off by matching up the sides that stretch and curl and the sides that dont move. I always use square knots. They do come out every so often, but not a lot.

My son is also getting "adopted" for Thanksgiving and going to an instructor's house. He didn't know which one when I spoke with him on Sunday.
