Hi there. Yesterday we were talking about Christmas gift ideas. My son just send me a message saying that an idea for Christmas is the St. Brendan medallion to put on the chain with his dog tags. He says St. Brendan is the patron saint for sailors. also, I was just looking them up and found another medallion for the armed forces, one for each branch. http://www.madonnashopsonline.com/Military-medals-Miraculous-Medals...
thought these were actually good ideas.

Talked to my son last night and told him that Best Buy in Charleston is the #1 store in country. He laughed and said "that must be why they call it the nuke shop" LOL

All good tips! I am forming a plan now... since we plan to be in Michigan over New Year's at a friends house in snowboarding country... we'll try to fly our sailor out of Grand Rapids on New Year's Day. That way we won't have to leave Michigan during all the New Year's Football etc. and get him back to Cincy. The advice on this site has been invaluable. Thanks so much! I'm also thinking I may drive to Charleston on Dec. 17th, bring his 42" TV (that I thought we were going to have to store for him), and drive him back on Saturday. Lots to consider in all this.

Julsburd, I tried to find certain postings about Grad and Go (form for flight info to print out), but I couldn't. Thought it was in the Boot Camp Moms group, and then a discussion, but no luck. The basics were: Have your recruit write out all of his flight info (Flight #, airline, time, airport, etc.) on a piece of paper and bring it to PIR and give it to you then. That way, you will have the specifics instead of relying on your new sailor's memory on that hectic day. Will just help to make things go more smoothly.

I tie the blankets with a square knot -- then there isn't a problem with them coming untied.

foaling-lady- I used a print fabric on one side, and a solid on the other. I can send a picture if you want me to. But the first one I made, I had a problem with the laundry thing. I didn't tie the knots tight enough, so when I washed it they all fell out! BUMMER. But the second one I made, they stayed together just fine.
A regular knot works just fine. My suggestion: DOUBLE KNOT them!!!!!! The single knots continuously come out, and he'll spend all his free time tying them!! I double knotted both blankets about two months ago, and haven't had a problem since. :)

I think the later flight out is a must. Technically, I'm not sure anyone is supposed to book a flight before 6:30... That doesn't mean they don't though! And rylons is completely right about the noon on Sunday Jan 2. That's the time they're required to be back by.
Aaron will be driving home... With car payments now, he doesn't have enough to buy a plane ticket without dipping into savings. Might as well get his use out of that new Jetta. :)
Julsburd- As far as transportation PIR weekend goes- Your plan with the train sounds like a wonderful idea. The train station is definitely within walking distance of the base.

That's the link for the train station in Great Lakes just in case you need it. It includes schedules and where you can come in from. :)

OK, one more fleece blanket question and then I'll shut up. If I use 2 different fabrics (2 prints) and knot them together, don't they get shifted out of shape and poufy in the washer? Do I need to sew little knots throughout the "body" of the blanket, like the way quilts are made, to hold the 2 blankets in place?

You guys are the best! I am able to plan so much better with all your advice and tips. I hadn't thought about flights home for Christmas... I guess I'd better get going on that too. It sounds like fyrwife and I have son's at the same PIR. I checked online and that PIR has 11 divisions graduating! That should be quite a sight. It will also create some logistics problems too like parking and hotel rooms huh? Still not sure whether we might take the Metra train into the station and walk over to the base. I have lived in and around Chicago before and their train system can be the best way to travel around. Even if we end of staying out at O'hare we can get a train from there into the city and then out again to Great Lakes or maybe there is even a train direct to the north shore from O'hare... I have to get used to asking for the military discounts. That is not a part of my vocabulary yet but it will be.

My son has a PIR date of 12/3 and will then be a G&G to Goose Creek. I was wondering about the Christmas break. Our son told us that his break will begin on Dec 17th and is about two weeks. What a wonderful present to have him home. I want to make airline reservations and was wondering if someone might be able to assit me with "normal" procedures. Will they be able to leave on the 17th or would it be best to have him leave on the 18th? If on the 17th, is it better to make an afternoon/evenening flight or does it matter? What about the return flight? Day? particular time? I definitly want him to spend as much time at home as possible, however, I want him back on base in plenty of time for reporting purposes.
