Julsburd, your son sounds like several of our sailors -- mine didn't do well in college either and he graduated from A school in Oct. They are given mandatory study hours and have to study in the classroom. And there is always someone available to help them.

aaronsgirl11 - it sounds like you have got some good things planned. He will love them all, I am sure. You might also include on a calendar the family and friend birthdays, just so he has a little help remembering those things.
You gave me a good idea too.

Kat, Do you have a "Hobby Lobby" craft store near you? I found a US Navy scrapbook kit there. It has lots of great Navy pages, stickers and cardstock stickers in it.

Hi all! My son will be going to A School in 2 weeks and I have been looking at YouTube videos etc. I am wondering if you have gotten feedback from your sailors about the difficulty of it? They make it sound very tough which is ok as long as they provide the support and study skills if necessary. I know my son is capable or he wouldn't have tested so high but he had bad experiences in college with study habits and now I am worrying all over again! Any experience would be appreciated.

Thanks, Kat! The box of items sounds like a good idea! I may have to include that in a care package sometime soon. :) And I've already started the scrapbook.. It was technically his birthday present that's ongoing.

I've been googling like crazy today! I think I'm going to buy a box, decorate it, and fill it with things I've been collecting since January. Plus I'll put all my letters and pictures I sent him in Boot camp. I also found another cute idea that I think will be wonderful... I'll buy a desk calendar, and write something for each day like a poem, quote, memory, or just a reason why I love him. Hopefully it'll make the days of Power School go a little quicker. :)

Aarons girl - A crafty idea, which he probably won't like, but that will be very practical, is to make him a little box of items that he will need now and then, like a needle and thread, safety pins, paper clips, Scotch tape, little scissors, nail clippers, tooth picks, little antibacterial wipes, bandaids, all those little things that we don't think about until we need them. Someone gave one to me as a gift and you know, it is perfect to put in the car and have if and when I need it. They used little snack size baggies to put stuff in, and then somehow sewed it all into a fabric cover so it folds up, almost like a wallet.
I'm also starting my son's Navy scrap book. Just ordered a bunch of scrapbooking items online and got the prints of the photos we too back today.
Will include all of his letters he wrote home, the program from the PIR, stuff like that.
Don't forget the Subway card as I hear it is right there, very close and a lot of the guys go there, especially late at night when they are studying.

NicksMom- Sounds like your son and his friends have the Black Friday thing figured out! :)

Does anyone have any good crafty ideas for Christmas presents? Aaron has listed off several things such as video games, gas cards, a pool stick (thanks to the Dive, he has a recent obsession). But I would like to make him something meaningful and useful. He always wants things, but I want to get him something he really needs.

It's so nice to hear of all the graduation info, even though itll be a while for my son yet. We'll be following the advice we got a while ago, to attend the Power School graduation, and that seems to be confirmed by recent posts. Since we're not too close (over 800 miles to drive), we're waiting for Power School graduation. Can hardly wait, but it won't be until next summer sometime, if my calculations are correction.

My son will be one of the adopted sailors on Thanksgiving. Since he won't be able to come home, he'll be "adopted" by one of the instructors and their family. It sounds like he's looking forward to it--a chance to see how another family celebrates the holiday.

We sent him his tv last week, and I have been worried he would spend all his time playing online games, but he said he hasn't been doing that much. Mostly studying, alone and with groups. My boy who hated to study in high school sounds so industrious. Wow! And since his GPA is high, he's been leading his study group. I knew he had it in him, it just took a while to surface. :)

The 3 night minimum and up front, no refunds policy goes for all Power School graduation weekends AND all Holiday weekends. Just for future reference. :)
Aaron found that one out when he booked ours for Thanksgiving weekend. :)
