Fonda Sue - does your son have any navy buddies who are mechanics? they have a real aice autoshop on base and my son did a lot of work on his friends cars for them - they just paid him back with food or beverages.
foalingmom - everytime i send cookies to my son by the time he gets them he said its like eatting granola (all crushed, etc)
my son has never flown in uniform yet (except when he first went to GC from GL) he too cites the security thing plus he says he'd hate to have something happen to the uniform and then he gets back and is hit with a surprise inspection. For luggage each time he's just brought a backpack with him and usually just a couple change of clothes - no baggage to worry about then.
Jeanne - I can imagine the tears are coming easy these days, but I'm sure they are also tears of JOY at how great your kids are and what a good job you and your husband have done! Just think with one married now grandbabies maybe in the future - how wonderful would that be:)

Thanks! I think I will get him on the phone once I know his computer has arrived and walk through the process with him. Then he can make the call and get his ticket himself. I am trying not to wish away my time with my excitement for Christmas to get here. At least I am comforted to know that NOW is the time for them to make their travel arrangements!

I found the best price for flights home for Christmas, but I had him book them since he had to call to get the military discount. He didn't get the discount for his Christmas flight, but he did when he came home over Labor Day -- wasn't much, but every little bit helps.

Excellent travel info everyone, thank you! My son is planning to come home for Christmas. I am expecting him to pay his own way, but it sounds like many of you moms are actually booking the flights for your kids. Do they have time to take care of this themselves or is it better for us to get him set and then have him reimburse us later. I don't think he has ever made a reservation for anything in his life :) He will start A school 11/3. Just looking for some advise.

My son was moved to first class on one leg of his flight a week or so ago. He didn't have any choice about flying in uniform, though, since he had just arrived in GC less than 2 weeks earlier. But he flew in coach in his assigned seat for 3 out of his 4 flights.

My son (a nuke officer on a sub) NEVER travels in uniform. He considers it a security risk. He tries extra hard not to draw attention to himself.

For those with questions about their sailors flying, here's what mine told me. He was traveling in uniform to come home and get my daughter in law. He was pulled to the front of the line going through security, and was "waved" through. In uniform, was first to board. When the passengers were seated, the flight attendant came to him, thanked him for his service and promptly asked him to move to the front of the plan. He was a little freaked at the request, thought he'd done sometime wrong. But they moved him to First Class. (UA)

Thanks for the info everyone. I think we may just take MLK holiday weekend and drive it down to him. Or my daughter is supposed to have a college audition in University of North Carolina - Greensboro sometime in Jan or early Feb so we would be 1/2 way there. We'll have to see when he gets into A school.

my son flew home over Labor Day and drove his car back. He had to fill out a request showing his travel plans, where he would be stopping each night, etc. and get it approved. There were some strict rules as to how many miles and time that he could drive.
Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on October 20, 2010 at 10:58am
And Musicmom- That's a really good question. If he was phase 2, I would think he would be able to drive it back, but I'm gonna let someone else answer that one. I don't wanna give a wrong answer. :/
