Nukemom - My son is set for PIR on 10/29 and is not grad n go. It just depends on when A school classes are forming up and when they get flights for new sailors to go down to SC. You will just have to take a chance that he won't be grad n go. I decided I would rather spend a few days in Chicago area than miss a chance to spend 2 days with my son.

aaronsgirl,
We moms all love our peculiar, smart-as-can-be nukes and we appreciate and love the good women who care for our special babies.

And... US Airways doesn't specify whether or not the passenger must be on orders. Aaron only came home once in uniform, and has traveled in civis every other time. According to their baggage policy on their website, the only requirement to be exempt from the ordinary baggage policy is that you are "Active U.S. military personnel with ID" :)

Thanks guys. :)
Since Aaron missed my junior prom, senior homecoming, and will miss my senior prom, I made him take me out to dinner in his dress blues. No, the PDA didn't get him in trouble. ;) And it was actually an soldier in camos that took the picture for us (he just happened to be standing outside Olive Garden when we were done eating dinner). I had him take a normal pic, and then requested a "sailor kiss" picture. Aaron was sort of awkward about it... he didn't know what to do. :)

And I'd just like to say how much I love this group! You guys are an awesome bunch, and I'm not sure what I'd do without you. Even though I'm a girlfriend, I feel so welcome here. :) Thanks to all. :)

Thanks Terry and fonda sue for the feedback. You know how it is, you want the answers now. I know I have to wait, but....just thought I'd see how other nuke grads went.

My son traveled in uniform when he came home, but he hadn't phased up yet. Just arrived in GC the week before. He did get bumped up to first class for one leg, apparently at the request of a solider in camo's. And the soldier was in coach! Very sweet of him.

My son has flown home twice while he was at Goose Creek (he is currently in NY for Prototype) and he has never had to pay baggage fees. Once in uniform one way the rest not. As soon as they saw his sea bag they pulled him out of line, checked him through and almost always upgraded him for free. He flew Continental/Delta.

My son is in BC right now, PIR 12/3. Can anyone tell me if they are usually grad and go? Did you get to spend time with your recruit in GL after PIR? Anxious for answers. Thanks!!

I haven't been on in a few days, but wanted to correct something I saw posted over the weekend. I recently stayed at the Ramada Inn on Ashley Phosphate, and it is about half a mile to the Northwoods Mall, which is across Rivers Ave. from the famous Best Buy and Wild Wings Cafe. I would certainly call that within walking range. On another matter, regarding checked baggage fees for sailors going home for the holidays - I believe the policy is they get two free checked bags when they are travelling UNDER ORDERS, which would be to a different duty station, not for a visit home, unfortunately. If they're in uniform, they may well not be questioned about the orders thing and may be OK - but then again, I believe they are discouraged from travelling in uniform for their own protection.

Hmmmm, Aaron's girl, hope that PDA wasn't too excessive in public and didn't get your sailor in trouble. ;)

My son got his military discount when he booked airfare in the last two weeks to come up for my dad's funeral. I'll ask him for some details of his booking and share.
