My son is in BC right now, PIR 12/3. Can anyone tell me if they are usually grad and go? Did you get to spend time with your recruit in GL after PIR? Anxious for answers. Thanks!!

I haven't been on in a few days, but wanted to correct something I saw posted over the weekend. I recently stayed at the Ramada Inn on Ashley Phosphate, and it is about half a mile to the Northwoods Mall, which is across Rivers Ave. from the famous Best Buy and Wild Wings Cafe. I would certainly call that within walking range. On another matter, regarding checked baggage fees for sailors going home for the holidays - I believe the policy is they get two free checked bags when they are travelling UNDER ORDERS, which would be to a different duty station, not for a visit home, unfortunately. If they're in uniform, they may well not be questioned about the orders thing and may be OK - but then again, I believe they are discouraged from travelling in uniform for their own protection.

Hmmmm, Aaron's girl, hope that PDA wasn't too excessive in public and didn't get your sailor in trouble. ;)

My son got his military discount when he booked airfare in the last two weeks to come up for my dad's funeral. I'll ask him for some details of his booking and share.

So it's ok to send microwave food, like popcorn, campbell's soup, etc? Was planning to send homemade cookies/brownies too in care packages, but this gives me more options. Umm, question though: do all of the rooms come with microwaves or do our guys have a lounge area they can use?

my3sons- I knew they were announcing it soon, but I couldn't recall the date! I can't wait to find out!! Hopefully it's in March so I can some cheap flights (hopefully) for my spring break! February would be even nicer for an 18th birthday trip. :)

For US Airways, active military members can check up to three bags. :)
I agree with Marybeth- I prefer to book straight through the airline.. When you deal with sites like Expedia and Travelocity, the ticket itself may be cheaper, but after they tack on their fees, it's about the same price. Some airlines will also offer military discounts on tickets, but you have to call them directly to get prices... Tickets are also more expensive over the phone. From my experience, the cheapest way to find flights is to book early, watch prices, and do it online through the airline.
You can also sign up for notifications so you know when they're offering deals. :)

Michimom you know what I meant. LOL I just meant blessed to be close to him.
I was wondering why your sister in law wouldnt be making the trip to see your son? Anyway....make sure if your son makes it to Fayetteville, that you get my address....I would love to cook him a meal. Maybe he could come home with my son for a weekend sometime. ( I would love to have a fellow sailor for a visit)

Vincent's Mom, You are so funny--one of the Blessed Moms. In that case, I guess I am NOT blessed. LOL

By the way, my sister-in-law and her family are in Fayetteville. I know she won't go visit her nephew, but my son may visit her if he gets a chance. We'll see. We won't see him until Christmas.

I think we'll mail my son's cell phone to him but take his laptop with us when we go visit during Thanksgiving. We live a long day's drive away so we're going to spend that weekend in GC.

I shipped my son's laptop, etc priority mail with insurance. It was expensive since it wouldn't fit in a flat rate box, so I used a bigger box and stuffed it full. He got it in 3 or 4 days. You can have an email sent to you to notify you of where the box is.
