One story about Challenge Coins is that when sailors went into a bar, they would slap a challenge coin on the bar. The sailor who didn't have a coin had to pay for the drinks!

I didn't know there was a game for the Challenge coins. I just thought they were nice keepsakes. for PIR, I bought him the Recruit training command coin, Navy core values coin, and the Navy Creed. for A school graduation, I am ordering his E-4 rank coin and Anchors Aweigh.

challenge coins are given sometimes for special occasions. My son received one from a friend of ours who is a reservist Master Chief when he was home on leave. Our friend is a Seabee and that is what was on the coin. Sailors collect them.

Sorry to sound dumb, but what's a challenge coin? I went to the website, but didn't see the word challenge anywhere.

His is Nov. 3. Thought for sure I'd have a Halloween baby, but no. He was a Sunday baby, like his sis.

Thank you all for your great suggestions. I will check them out.

He does have a camera, and we bought him a challenge coin that we plan to have inscribed for his Power School graduation, so that will go to him at a later date. The gift cards are a great idea--I had forgotten that I read that there was a Subway there, and the NEX card would be perfect. We like getting gifts a little more personal than gift cards, but it will be tough with his situation--limited space, far away, etc.

What he would REALLY love would be either games for his XBox or maybe some newer gaming system, but we don't want him distracted too much from his studying, so that's not gonna happen. :)

Thanks again!

aaronsgirl So glad to hear you were able to spend some time with your sailor this last weekend. I'm sure it had to be an exciting time for you. :) I'm going this coming weekend to see my son for the first time since he arrived in GC on 9/18..can't wait!

Another good place to find Challenge Coins is Amazon at "Northwest Territorial Mint".

Laurilyn and Michimom - here are a couple ideas. I also used the Ms. Field's cookie cake (pizza size), but for power school Aschool grad which we did not go to. I used bakeawish.com for his birthday. They send small 2-3 serving cakes. Will also send free overseas on birthdays so wanted to support them. My son said the cake was really good. I have also send a gift from the popcorn factory (popcornfactory.com). None of these are cheap, but I can afford occasionally for a special occasion. Also - if you go to the "care package" group, a mom there has posted an idea for a birthday "cake" she mailed her son. I am going to try this next year (if he is not out on a sub). As far as a gift idea - a subway gift card will be welcome. Also, I have posted several times on this, but with new moms coming on board all the time - worth mentioning again - you can order a nex (Navy exchange) gift card which can be used at any NEX. That site also lets you pick out a greeting card to send - a huge selection that you tailor to your needs - send as is or change the message, the font, color, write your own, etc. I have sent these several times (including Christmas) and he really appreciated them. Hope these ideas will help. It is hard having them away for birthdays and holidays, especially the first times. Just know that for most of them, they are excited to be where they are doing and learning what they are. Good luck on your journey - my son finished prototype almost a year ago and is on a sub. I am proud of him, but it is still hard to miss special days. You learn to make whatever time you do see them a special time.

Michimom - Does he have a camera? He might like a really small one for when he goes out in the fleet and does some traveling. I think that's we're going to get my son this year because he doesn't have his own. Just used ours whenever he needed one.
