Michimom, Have you seen any Challenge Coins? They make a great present because they are really cool and don't take up much space because they are small.

aaronsgirl - so happy you got to see him! Cherish those moments.

Just spoke with my son, who will be starting his A school classes tomorrow. He confirmed he won't be able to come home for Thanksgiving, but will be able to see us at Christmastime. Plus, his birthday is in two weeks, and this is his first birthday away from home. :( He has no idea what he would like as a birthday gift--told him to think about it. Any suggestions for an MM just starting A school appreciated.

I'm not sure I really announced it here. haha. He came home for his A school leave last Friday night. :) It's been a crazy ten days... I'm sad to see him go, but it's time I get back on my normal schedule. My classes are starting to get ignored. :/

I got to go on my first date in 4 months last night! :) I talked him into wearing uniform (dress blues :) ), and we went out to Olive Garden (delicious!). He got some looks, and a lot of handshakes. One older lady followed us outside after we put our name in, and she thanked him for his service. When he said no problem, she said, "No, what you guys do is amazing. You are all in my thoughts and prayers," and hugged him. I then proceeded to cry (and feel like an idiot! haha). Then she hugged me and said that I (as in his family) was in his thoughts and prayers too. She asked if we were married, and I just smiled and said not yet. I told her I'm working on it. :) I was so proud. That moment made the months without him worth it!

Why does 10 days go so slow without him and so fast when I'm with him? *Sigh* Off to the airport tomorrow...

Next weekend when I go see my son, I'll be staying at Hyatt Place Hotel in North Charleston. Looks to be a great location by a local mall/restaurants, close to the base (approx 9-10 miles) and very modern rooms. On tripadvisor.com this hotel has had nothing but stellar reviews. Check out their website: http://www.hpcharlestonhotel.com/ It includes, breakfast, has free internet, huge 42 inch flat screen tvs and other amenities as well.

This is where we stayed when I went to visit my boy after PIR. I talked with the group sales office at the Ramada Inn off Ashley Phosphate Road in North Charlseton. This place has been absolutely wonderful. They have a hot breakfast in the morning (waffles, eggs, sausage, grits, biscuts, gravy plus other standard breakfast foods), an indoor and an outdoor pool, smoking and non-smoking floors (ask for 2nd floor rooms), pet friendly, complimentary social hour from 5-7 on M-F (beer, wine, food). The rooms decor is dated but it is all slated for an upgrade as a new management company has bought it. I used one of the motel book coupons and got a $59.95 rate. Alana Stagner is the Director of Sales and she has registered in their reservation system under Navy Moms rate. She says to call her and she will make sure everything is taken care of until the front desk people get used to it--for me its value is not having to find a coupon book and risk not being able to get a room. Her number is 843-572-2200.

I don't think it gets any easier. :) I'm getting ready to fly the coop too... And my mom doesn't seem to like the idea. I'm the youngest, and I think it's starting to hit my parents that once I'm gone, they have no more!

cameowlot- Just some added info. :) Unless your son buys one of the personal mailboxes, he'll never really have a personal address. Once he has a class number for A school, the address line that says "Indoc" will change to "Class ####." And once he's on T-Track it will change to that. All their mail goes to one building and is distributed on weekdays. :)
I've never really had a problem shipping packages down there. I've sent three or four and each time he receives them in 3-5 days. He tends to receive my packages faster than I can receive his. Letters are another story... It takes a week or longer for him to receive the cards I send! Oh the way the mail system works down there... :)

Good morning nuke moms. I've just joined ... found out about this group last night at Springhill Suites in Great Lakes, time to move from PIR 10/15 and get on with my son's next Navy life. Heard lots of scary things about nuke school, will be depending on you guys for info on how to help him get thru. He's 18 and rarin' to go, guess he knows more than I do about what's ahead of him, I believe he'll do just fine and I'm seriously glad that now I can email or even call him once in a while! Goodbye Chicago, hello Charleston!
