Six months
Upon completion of the 6 month academic course at Nuclear Power School, students are assigned to one of the two Nuclear Power Training Units (NPTU's) where there are several nuclear reactor prototypes in operation. The locations are Ballston Spa, NY and Charleston, SC.

The prototypes serve a two-fold purpose: to test power plant designs, and to train Navy personnel to operate and maintain nuclear propulsion plants. The prototypes are identical in nearly all aspects to their sea-going counterparts. The typical trainee spends six months qualifying as a nuclear power plant operator. Part of this period is spent learning in detail all of the systems and components of the prototype. In order to provide the highest degree of competence and safety in nuclear propulsion plant operations, it is essential that all operators have a thorough understanding of the plant as a whole. By the time a trainee reports to his nuclear-powered ship, she or he already has considerable experience in operating and maintaining a nuclear propulsion plant.

Hey BB! My boyfriend is currently down in SC for A school. He's a Nuke, too. All of the schooling takes about 2 years if I'm remembering right. A school is in SC and is 24 weeks. Then comes power school, which if I'm not mistaken is about the same length and is still in SC. Last is prototype. That's the one that can take place in SC or NY. My sailor said he won't find out which until part ways into Power school which one he'll be going to. Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Jeanne, That is so awesome! Congrats to him!! How proud you must be!!

DIego has only three weeks of school left and will graduate from high school on 06 June. Sadly, we lost a dear friend last week. She drove him and his friend in the Homecoming parade in our town with her Roadster! They had the best car and it even had the "rumble seat" and that was so cool. She was only 49 years old, diagnosed with lung cancer in Jan. 08, lost her husband in June 08 to a brain anuersym and she passed last Wednesday. She was a retired Detroit Police Officer and her family in "blue" attended, one was in the Navy for many years, discharged then went into the Air Force, just returned over the war and back on the job by two weeks. Then, on Monday, the Detroit Police Department loses one of the own in a early morning shooting. Five Officers were shot, one died......so now they are in mourning. Our friend is now at peace and though we will always miss her, she is Home with her husband, brother and dad as well as God. That gives us peace.

Diego is looking forward to September............................

My sailor subscribed to Comcast with his roomie. They each pay $30 a month for internet access. They were hooked up within a week of applying.
Comment by Dana (David's Mom) on May 3, 2010 at 8:38pm
Rebecca_Jordans Mom,
I believe (not 100% sure) the only wifi available is Sprint and Comcast cable but before you renew be sure whatever company he is with is available on the base. My son had SBC but couldn't transfer to Goose Creek (he now has cable internet service which he spits with his roommate).
Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on May 3, 2010 at 8:27pm
Rebecca-Jordans Mom- Yes, there is WI FI available once they get to Goose Creek. However, they have to order it, and I think it took about a week, maybe more, for my sailor to actually get the connection in his room. Hope that helps :)

RE: not sure if this is the same thing, but my son received a coin from the Great Lakes base commander on the Thursday before PIR. He told me that the honor graduates always received a coin from the commander at the PIR ceremony. He told me that their division did so well (hall of fame, captain's cup winner, highest academic avg, etc.) that the commander came and talked to them and gave each of them one of the coins. He said it was a real honor to get it and supposedly it was the first time she had given it to a whole division. This was almost 2 years ago. His PIR was May 9,2008.

Lynn - I just finished reading the poem you posted from FB. It really hit home - my son just deployed yesterday on a sub until mid June. He is not as excited about being on the subs as he thought he would be. He is in Groton and fine when on land, but not excited at all about going back out. As a mom, you want to just fix it. I just want to hug him. We talked to him quite a while Thurs evening, then I got a call from him at work yesterday and they were getting ready to leave. He said - just wanted to tell you one more time I love you and miss you. We are planning on going to see him this summer. I am so proud of him.
