Pylfer, Welcome as you start this journey with your recruit/sailor. There is only one location for "A" school and Power School and that is Goose Creek, South Carolina. When they get to Prototype school they can either stay at Goose Creek or go to Ballston Spa, New York.

Hi Courty, I am not sure how the housing works there. I know Thomas said that he can't move off the base part for about 4 weeks... or completion of some part .. Hopefully someone can jump in here...He just got down there and is INDOC which is 2 weeks then he begins A school After a completion of that he is able to move off rent a home with others.. I think he said 4 to 6 weeks. .. Are you on Facebook?

Hi everyone! I'm a Navy wife.. still very new to the whole Navy thing. My husband left for BC on March 16. He is entering the Nuke program and will be in Charleston, SC for A school. I am so proud of him but I have so many questions. We were told many different things about housing once he got to A school. I know it will last 20 months and I will be able to move down with him but I don't know much about the process. The last thing we heard was that housing has become privatized in SC and the Navy will start looking for housing for us after his 3rd week in BC. They will then send him directly to SC after his graduation where he will pick out a house for us. They will then send him back up to PA where we live and we will be able to move down and be settled before his A school starts. Is this how it is actually going to go? Does anyone have any idea? I realize we still have 7 1/2 weeks of BC to get through but I'm just trying to be prepared for what the next few months are going to bring. Any info or advice would be so helpful!!

Somewhere on this site I found the information on ordering the military pack for mailing packages, you call 800-610-8734 press1, press1, press 2 and ask for the military pack. They'll set up an account for you for re-ordering also. I was told it would take 10 days but it was closer to 14. It's a package of 6 boxes with mailing labels and a generous roll of tape. When they deploy overseas they have the customs labels also. I saved over $60.00 on the 5 boxes I sent...you know the saying "if it fits it ships"? well that tape came in real handy!!

I sent a small package measuring about 8 by 8 by 8 inches (weighed 9 ounces) via USPS. It cost me $10 plus $4 for $300 insurance to his indoc address.
Is there a better cheaper quicker way to get stuff to my hero?

Navy/ArmyMom - Check out the site bakeawish. I sent my son a cake from there. It was small - like 7 or 8 in diameter. I haven't been on the site recently. They also send overseas. He said the cake was really good. Also - if you want, you can go to the NEX site and send him a NEX gift card - or better yet a Subway card. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that information, Sheila.

Rosemary, we wish you and your sailor the very best as he progresses on and gets closer to his completion of Power School! NY will become as special to you as Charleston was because your sailor will be there! Congratulations to your sailor and best wishes to you and your family!

By the way, how long do they stay in New York?
Comment by Kimber on March 24, 2010 at 7:32pm
Thanks Darla for the information... wasn't sure what the delay was about.

Thomas said A School didn't start for a couple weeks that it was delayed. Has anyone heard anything different?
