Grace,

SPU's stay at Prototype and instruct. They are responsible for graduating the students. They have the responsibility to ensure the students learn. My son is a SPU in BS right now. He got picked up 10/07 a month or so before he graduated from prototype. Reenlistment is required (eight years total). My son got pushbutton E-5 and a large reenlistment bonus. My son was interested in appplying for officer while a SPU. The application process is easier on shore vs. being deployed. The biggest trade off is that shore duty for SPU's is up front (@ four years) with four years sea duty at the end. Usually there are some advantages going to the fleet for SPU's. SPU's out of prototype are the hot runners. When they get to the fleet they start at the bottom and have to qualify. Congratulations that your son is being considered.

Grace, it sounds like you're asking about "staff pick-ups". They're simply nucs who've just completed prototype, but are considered to have instructor potential, and are picked up for a two year tour as a staff instructor at prototype. They didn't used to have to re-enlist, but it's possible that's changed. Most do re-enlist though, since the cash is so tempting for those looking to start playing "House", and they haven't been to sea yet, so aren't fully aware of how much it can stink at times. They find out a month or so before their class is graduating, right around the same time everybody is learning what ship or boat they're headed to.

Hi Judy,
It's too bad your son feels that way about Facebook. I thought myspace was for kids and Facebook was the more mature medium. I keep in touch with family and friends all over the country, some I haven't seen or talked to in years. I even use it to get to know my coworkers better. We really don't get much chance to talk at work, so it's been great. Now, I LOVE it because I can find my son on it at night and have a little "chat" with him before saying goodnight. Boy, does that make a mama feel good. ;^)
I too hope your son changes his mind. Maybe the other sailors talking about using it to keep in touch with their moms will help.

Hey Judy, what does your son consider "old" to be on FB. I am over 50 and I have many of our children's friends as well as our K's. It is a great avenue to re-connect with so many as well as make new friends. He is really missing out, that makes me sad for you and for him. Prayers that he will change his mind and soon!!

Maybe your son will agree to IM messanger. If he is on the web you can IM while he is doing other stuff.

Ben will go to class regardless...he's just that way, and right now he's doing pretty well in class rank and that motivates him to stay on his game plan...still when you aren't 100% it will be difficult for him. He's really looking forward to coming home after A school, he was a grad and go and so he's really ready to spend some time with the family. I didn't know that about sick time...that would motivate me to do just as he's doing. Right now we are counting down the days until his first leave.

Thank you Pat ~ I tried to tell him to go to the doctor, but he thinks differently, however I can say that I just texted him your advise and I KNOW he listens to Navy For Moms!! He'll get that message first thing in the morning. He's amazed at all that I have learned here! Today I saved over $53.00 in mailing him 'care packages' (3 very full boxes) because of the information I learned here on ordering the military pack...so I really appreciate the nurse in your response! These kids are our "treasure" :) and it's hard being so far away.

Hope he feels better soon and sees a Dr. on Sat. morning. Twenty four hours of an antibiotic can work miracles!! (But be sure he takes all of it. Oops, there's the nurse in me coming out)
Comment by Ben's mom on March 10, 2010 at 12:42am
He's in A school...I had him go get over the counter today...he's very worried about missing any time in class. I will tell him to go on Saturday though...we've had something like this here and it's awful, 10 days of antibiotics so far...
Comment by Pat L. in IL on March 10, 2010 at 12:35am
Ben's mom, Is he in "A", Power, or Prototype? If he's in A or Power, could he go get something over the counter until Sat and then see a Dr.? If he's in Prototype, their schedule is really different but he would have a day off sometime during the week to see Dr. I know they get very worried about missing any time.
