OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

He too had to borrow peoples cell phones I think he also bought some calling cards. He said they also have more access to computers too, I dont think they have to pay to use them at GC, not like it was at BC.

Comment by Mark on October 15, 2009 at 7:26pm: Remember - they are training to operate a nuclear power plant, and most of the watchstations on a ship or sub do not have constant supervision, and (especially on a sub) they will be responsible for handling other duties, not relating to watchstanding or qualifications as well. One of the reasons that nukes are required to arrange for their own place to live during prototype is to give them a chance to be irresponsible, to verify they can be relied upon before they get to a ship. So yes, it's time to let them find their way.

Comment by Anti M on October 15, 2009 at 7:17pm: I did find a history of naval uniforms, some of which I knew from a long time ago, I was glad I'd remembered correctly ... very long time ago, next week's anniversary celebrates my first day in boot camp, 30 years ago (10/21/79). Amazing how little really changes.

Comment by Anti M on October 15, 2009 at 2:39pm: As I understood it when I was in, the chevron represented the bottom of an anchor. That, or it was copied from the British Royal Navy; they had similar insignia around when our Navy began using the chevron designs.

FYI, I live in Santa Clara County, half way between San Jose and San Francisco. We are between 101 and 280. NOT near IS 5 (his most probable route). I know where most of the Northern Calif moms are located. If he is in route and needs something - let me know.

Comment by LLovesmysailor on October 14, 2009 at 5:39pm: Earning their Dolphins is the most important thing a submariner has to earn once he gets to his sub. If they don't earn their Dolphins, they can't stay in the sub service. You will also hear them refered to as Fish. But your son has a long way to go before he needs to worry about earning his Fish. A school, power school and prototype came first.
