If I remember correctly, my son's trip to DC went like this. He was with a group of 5 or 6 guys being interviewed. There were a series of interviews conducted by a group of officers. If a candidate passes, the last interview is with an admiral. The admiral gives either a thumb up or thumb down. Immediately after the admiral gave my son the thumb up, he signed the papers and was sworn in (I think he was the only one who got the thumb up). Silly me. I thought there would be some special ceremony. I had threatened to take him back to DC and have them do it again with the admiral, of course, so I could video everything. That fell on deaf ears, like many maternal cluckings (please feel free to substitute your own word) from former helicopter moms. I am out of sorts tonight - getting my younger son ready to depart from CA to OK. Don't mind me. I am just going through another impending empty-nest episode. I dread sorting through more boxes that they leave behind. I am familiar with the East Coast or the West Coast. The Mid West is like a foreign country. I hear they don't have sushi, Indian food, Chinese food, sour dough bread, Gordon Biersch beer or vegetables. Go ahead, Nuke moms, LYAO. Just hand me another box of tissues.

I don't know if there is an Officers Nuke group, but even if there is you are still in the right place. There are moms of Officers and wives of Officers ( like me) who can answer questions for you. He just needs to get into the program. If they are sending him to DC, it sounds like he has a good shot at it.

Denise, I'm guessing you are talking about an Officers slot in the Nuke power program? My husband was an Officer but he went into the program from the USNA. I know a fare bit about the Officer training for the Nuke program, but not how they get into the slot. The Navy requires great patience. Everything moves on Navy time.

When my son was at power school only married sailors could live somewhere other than in the Q. They had to move off base when they got to prototype.

Cyndi, I don't know why people get told they get 2 weeks after boot camp. They don't, none of them!

Dalton's mom - when you are checking flights, check flights into Milwaukee also, We flew into Milwaukee and booked rental car thru hotwire. Airport was small and had good experience with flying into there and with rental cars. Good luck!!

Hi Dalton's Mom. We also drove a long way to the PIR, thinking that my son was a grad N Go. It changed the day before the PIR, so we stayed and spent some time with him before he left on Monday morning. Don't miss it, its a once in a life time event. Unless, like me, you have a second child decide to enlist.

Welcome Dalton's Mom, First of all, your sailor would not get to come home after basic or be able to ride with you to SC. The recruiter could not possibly know who would be grad and go. Practically speaking, because you live so close to Goose Creek maybe it would be a waste of gas and time to go to PIR. BUT REALISTICALLY, PIR is a fabulous event that you will remember for the rest of your life. Never having been terribly practical myself, I wouldn't miss it for the world!! Once he gets to GC, if his test scores are good, you can see him on weekends.

Our sailor was home for the Christmas holidays last year while he was in A school at GC. We are 850 miles away. Be sure the chit request gets in as soon as their instructors tell them, so you can buy airline tickets if necessary.
Also, our son flew on Delta, and last year they did not charge for military luggage. So he returned to GC with about 200 pounds of stuff.
