Anti M, Before I married my husband I lived in Annapolis and taught an adult sewing class. All my students were senior officer's wives. I asked them what one thing did I need to know before I became a Navy wife. They all said the same thing. The Chiefs run the Navy and to never forget that.(and petty officers become chiefs) A lot of junior officers wives had a lot of problems with where they fit in the Navy.

.. Just to be crystal clear, I have a very deep respect for what the nukes do. It ain't easy. I could have and chose not to because women couldn't go on ships at the time. When I flew out to boot camp, my recruiter was on the plane with me until they closed the doors, a nuke contract in his hand trying to get me to switch over. How times have changed, huh?

Now if you want to know who I had a beef with in the Navy ... two types: young guys who had something to prove and couldn't take orders from a woman, and junior officer's wives who hadn't learned to respect the enlisted men and women.

When I went through A school, the nukes still went through the same A schools too before shipping off for Power School. They often were in their own classes, and we got put on hold to get the nukes through. There has always been rivalry, but seems strange to me that the moms would pick it up. Between the sailors, it was mostly friendly, a lot of joking. I went through an advanced school with a lot of nukes, and yes, they had a better handle on the math and such. But I had learned skills they hadn't. It didn't matter, we were all sailors in the long run. That I was an ET (and female) made me acceptable company, LOL. I even dated nukes because I liked smart guys. I knew plenty of ETs who could have been nukes (like me) but had chosen to go with the non-nuke program. All good.

Nancy, Congrats to your sailor and enjoy having him home. Be sure to give him an extra hug for the rest of us.

I have often said and fully believe that there are two US Navys. There is the traditional US Navy and then there is the Nuclear Navy. There is, even after all these years, a certain amount of bad blood left behind by ADM H. Rickover. It is only in the sub service where Coners and Nukes are in close quarters for long stretches of time that Nukes and Non-Nukes become friends. I am friends with two moms on my sons sub. Neither of their sons are Nukes and I don't make an issue of his being a Nuke. But then neither does Alex. It also does not help that almost all re-enlistment bonuses have been cut or ended, except for the Nukes who get thousands of dollars more than any other sailors in the Navy, That other Navy, that is.

Judy - it was also interesting to me that your son has so far found power school easier than "A" school. When I realized that he was at the halfway point, and that he was exceptionally well-prepared with math and chemistry, it does make some sense though. I'd be curious to know if he still feels that way after the second half. The first half would have been more up his alley than "A" school, if he was exceptionally well-prepared for the math and science. The second half material will probably challenge him a lot more, since it will involve a lot more material unlike his earlier coursework, which was either review, or heavily math-based, so that his superior math prep paid off for him. He'll be learning (lots of rote memory) stuff that he hasn't been exposed to until now, and there will be less math. I suspect that although he found "A" school harder than the first half of power school, that he didn't find "A" school to be all that difficult, either. Is that about right?

Judy, Is your son going to try to go to Ballston Spa or stay at Goose Creek for Prototype? I'm really curious to see how Jeff gets things planned for where he will live for proto. He has always been a bit of a procrastinator!!!!! I know, I know, it's his problem but I just have a "little" mom holdover!! heehee!
