Monica, why does being on shore duty create an "impass" ? Am I read more into this than I should? Please pm me if the explanation is too colorful. I have two boys. I found a little brochure in cleaning up my son's room that must have been handed out in a health class in high school. Very educational. Much more than I ever learn in high school or college. No tips that would be useful at our age.

If anyone is interested, I just finished a pillowcase for a sailor on the USS New York. It is to celebrate the commissioning in Nov. If you'd like to see the pictures, they are on the Molly's Adopt a Sailor site. It includes the Fallen Heros crest for the World Trade Center.

OK, so that's why Alex won't let anyone who drinks, ride in his sports car. That car is his baby.

I know why my son never ask me advice about cleaning. He was afraid that I would arrange to have Merry Maids come on a weekly basis. Can you imagine the ribbing he would have gotten if his helicopter mommy made sure that his room was clean properly. LOL

BLW,
I have the same attitude as you. While raising my son (and his 2 other brothers)he learned to clean his own room and bath, do his own laundry and cook. He lived for several years on his own before enlisting. If he were to ever ask me to send something or wants advise I'll be right there (and he knows I would) otherwise he is on his own now to grow, learn and become a man. Besides he earns more money than I do with very little expenses so far. He needs to do this on his own. I am so proud of how he has turned out and how he wants to do this on his own. Can't learn from mistakes if he doesn't make any. May sound cruel but i don't think so.

I don't think you started anything like a firestorm. Just some really good discussions. I think the difference for Nukes is the amount of time they need to study and that was what I was talking about. But it is also about how different our kids are and how they handle school. I remember being in college and asking my Mom not to send things because my room was so small. The girl next door had a bunch of stuff from her Mom and couldn't have been happier. Its nice to compare notes.

Patricia, I just asked my husband (he was on the Nimitz) and he says the Nukes are all together in their own berthing spaces. Hope that helps.

My husband had been through Nuke school years earlier. I knew the time and commitment it takes to get through A school, Power School and Prototype. I felt that it was more important for him to spend the time studying than looking for rides and shopping. It was never about the costs or mothering him. I send some of those same things in care packages to adopted sailors stationed overseas. Too many failed inspections can result in the loss of priviledges.

... and Palmetto bugs can FLY! That freaked me out in Florida. If anyone gets orders to Japan, I'll tell you about "benjo spiders" Yikes.

While my son was in New York, I use to send him Wal-mart gift cards. That way he could buy what he needed when they went out shopping.
