Cyndi, I can see that changing in the not to distant future. How can recruiters stretch the truth when groups like N4Ms is watching and telling Moms & theirs soon to be sailors the truth.

Lori, Have your son check around with other sailors. A lot of the guys work on their own cars and might be able to help him out. They will also know who can be trusted in the area.

"A" school and Power school have nice barracks - prototype is when they have to find a place on their own; it's kind of a test of their maturity before they become honest-to-god nukes...check out the links to Karen Gallagher's son's blogs in the box above for more information, they explain the different nuke jobs very well, and are extremely well written

hi cameowlot -
Lyn gave your son some fabulous advice in taking chemistry, physics, and ESPECIALLY advanced math his senior year. Taking it easy the senior year would be a huge mistake, and doing well in those three classes would make nuke school 100% easier. He has a golden opportunity to prepare himself the right way, something so few do going in.

steph, There are things you can do. Buy him funny and/or encouraging cards. Sen then a few times a week. Send small care packages with his favorite munchies. Tell him you understand that he won't be able to call a lot and that's OK because he needs time to study.

Hi, to both our MEP moms. Be prepared to be supportive and for the ups and downs that are sure to come. If your sailor is still in high school, make sure he takes plenty of math, chemistry and physics classes. While the rest of seniors are taking it easy their senior year, your sailor needs to prepare himself for the most challenging school in the country. Power school and prototype are not like anything his friends will experience. But the payoff in the end is amazing. His friends will still be in college while he will be responsible for the safety and operation of a nuclear reactor that will power the worlds largest war ship or a nuclear submarine.

We stayed at the Comfort Inn & suites, and it was well worth the money. The breakfast was good and they had fresh chocolate chip cookies every evening. We had a two room suite and Alex stayed with us one night. I would go there again.

Ashley, My son went to power school in GC and then went to Ballston Spa for prototype. He had a week to get from GC to NY. That included finding housing since there is no Navy housing in NY. He then had 3 weeks leave before joining his sub in Groton after the 6 months in NY. I'm not sure that is normal. He is an ET. He had the time off because he had to wait for his sub to return. Hope that helps.

Pam, double wow! Let me know if you want to form a boodle brigade. I'll "adopt" the Marine or either one in the Army.
Regards, B.
