Having just moved myself and spenting last weekend helping my son move. I can tell you that no move every goes smoothly. So if you expect something to go wrong you can roll with it. When my husband was in the Navy and the Nuke program, we moved 7 times in three years. I always moved as much of my sons things as possible in the car. That way they weren't locked up in a truck. The base housing that I saw last year in SC looked very nice. Being a Navy wife is about being very flexable. Good Luck and welcome to the sisterhood.

Rebecca, Have your son use his time wisely. He now has all those months to take some college courses that will be a huge help when he starts the program. He should talk to his recruiter, but courses in Chemistry, advanced math courses and of course Physics. The biggest mistake that DEPers make is getting out of the habit of being in school. And Nuke power school is the toughest school he'll ever go through. The more preparation now the easier his time will be in Nuke school later.

Rebecca, This is how it worked for my son. When it was determined that there was an opening in Nuke school, they sent him to basic 9 weeks prior to the opening date. So he left for basic on Mar 4, had PIR on May 2, and left for Goose Creek the afternoon of May 2. He had 1 week of INDOC and then started "A" school classes. Hope this helps.

Debbie,
There are three options other than the fleet after proto. ELT is one as earlier noted; it is a three month school in chemistry and radiological controls open to MMs only. About 20% of MMs are selected. Another option open only to non-ELT MMs going to submarines is nuc welder school; I think it is also three months, and only about 10% of those eligible get it. The third option, available to all, including (depending on timing) an ELT completing their school, is staff instructor at proto, a two tour that they must extend their enlistment two more years for.

I just wondered if there was anything at the end of prototype school? Are the sailors just finished and go on to their next assignment? When do they find out?

Jane, Becca, and Lea, Sorry that it took me so long to get back to you. Thurs. PM Comcast came to fix somebody in the neighborhood and knocked out Internet to about 4 of us. Of course, they couldn't come back to fix it until this AM. My sailor, Jeff, is in 0905-2. Even if our sailors aren't in the same section, we will all be in GC in Nov. How cool is that? Happy 4th to all. Pat
