More on the cell phone issue: my son got a military discount and asked if I want to be on his plan as family. I haven't switched yet, but may do so. This would also solve the problem of what to do when they're at sea -- since other family members are using the plan, you wouldn't have to suspend; just make sure it's still getting paid. When my son was on my plan, it cost me less than $10 more.

I can vouch for Alltell cell phone service in that area as well. I've found it to be most reliable in all my travels and that is what my son has on base.

I've been by the Econo Lodge and it looks very nice from the outside. I thought I would book there in the future because it's so close to base.

There is a big offensive launched by Marines in Afghanistan. Let's all pray extra hard today for their safety and success. This is NOT an OPSEC violation as this info is on TV and radio. God bless our soldiers and bring them home safely!

Mary, Congratulations on your new Petty Officer. Have a wonderful 2 weeks!!

Jane, Our sons could be clones!!! My son is a couple of weeks into Power School too...class 0905-2. What class is your sailor in?

Rebecca, The Navy will change your son and motivate him. My son used to stay up late and sleep most of the day, wasn't motivated to find a job or do well in college even though he graduated #2 from high school and had 3 years at the Math and Science Center. He is so much happier now that he has a Navy routine, gets to bed at a decent hour and he studies hard. I am so proud of him! He's determined to succeed and it's a total turnaround thanks to the Navy.

The math in Power school is front-loaded, with the hardest in math, physics, and heat transfer/fluid flow, which you didn't mention, but is in the first half as well. The math the rest of the way is just basic calculations, with chemistry and radcon probably being the toughest, but not so much as the earlier classes. He'll have to do his best to retain the early stuff though, because it will show up again on his comprehensive exam at the end.

Anti M is correct, nukes are eligible for the Individual Augmentee program, just not til later, after the first sea tour. I have heard of several in the IA program. The quality of high school math programs must vary widely around the country; I'm a little surprised to hear someone say that nuke school math is more in depth than Algebra 2. I would strongly disagree. The only thing I recall being much different (not more advanced, just different) is the way the Navy likes to use the "railroad track" method for calculations involving units of measurement. I won't try to explain it on here, but it can be a little hard to get used to, even though once grasped, it is actually far superior than other methods of doing unit conversions/calculations. I'd be interested in what Shelli has to say on that, by the way, if you don't mind...

HI SHELLI!! So glad to see you stopped in for a visit! We miss you!

Rebecca, Shelli's description fits my son too!! And I think you would find that the description fits a vast majority of them! Because they are so smart, things have always come easy. Now in Nuke school when things start getting difficult, for the first time in their lives they have to figure out HOW to study. I can only speak for "my nuke" but for the first time he has found a challenge and is working very hard to achieve his goals. He is proud of himself and we are too. (And thankful he has found his direction) Pat

Rebecca, I once asked my son why he could do well in the Nuke program but couldn't manage to bring a book home from school. He looked at me like I was nuts and said "Because they Pay me in the Navy. Besides, once you meet your first senior chief, you know the time for fooling around is OVER!" In the past, I've heard senior officers joke that there were two Navies. The US Navy and the US Nuclear Navy. No way are they going to let their nukes go anywhere near the army or marines. They are way to expensive to train. On very rare occasions there are guys who volunteer to work in another service.
