Hi DWEAVER (and Dawn),
I'm sorry to hear of the struggles your son's are having with math in Power school. Your reads on the situation are spot on, I think - there isn't much you can do but be discretely encouraging and be there when he feels like talking about it. DWEAVER, I'm a little surprised that after passing Algebra 2, a nuc would still find Power school math so difficult, because most of an Algebra 2 curriculum is beyond any Power school math. If you don't mind saying, did your son do OK in that class? Also has it been a couple years since he took any high school math, so that his skills got too rusty?

Let me give this a shot and see how close I get. NUPOC....Nuclear Power officer candidate program? I just talked to my husband who was USNA and is still a Nuke. Tumbleweed, tell your son to take that Chemistry even if it is not as a third major.

For all to read, especially those in Balston Spa, please see my post above under Warning for Sailors in Balston Spa. Very sad.

I'll add that the policies I cited are for enlisted - I could see where officers might be discouraged from switching from sub to surface, etc - prototype still doesn't affect where a nuke goes though, in fact all the current prototype plants are of sub plants, the carrier prototype was decommissioned some time ago. One NY plant may be of a cruiser plant (there are no more nuke cruisers), but the reactor itself has been used on both cruisers and LA class fast attacks. I haven't been to NY, so I'm not sure if the engine room on it is set up as a cruiser or a sub.
Comment by Mark on June 27, 2009 at 1:30am
What prototype a nuke qualifies at has no bearing at all on whether they will be carrier or subs. Prototype just teaches a nuke how to qualify on a nuke plant, The systems are similar on carrier and sub plants; the main difference is the scale. All submariners must be volunteers, though there are not enough submarine billets for all volunteers, so some sub volunteers will end up on a carrier. Also, after the initial sea tour, a nuke may transfer from sub to surface, and vice versa, if they volunteer to do so.
Comment by LLovesmysailor on June 26, 2009 at 10:05pm
If you sign up for subs, you can get either a boomer or a fast attack. Because the prototype and other systems are different there is no transfer from subs to surface or surface to subs. One exception is that if for some reason you can't serve on a sub you can be transferred to a carrier. When my husband was in the Navy they had a guy developed claustophobia (sp?) and they had to transfer him off the sub.
