Maria - I just posted on Sept 6th about the nex gift cards. It is really a good idea as they can use it at the big nex on base, but also the mini nex that is connected to the Subway. When we were there for our son's power school graduation, we saw guys walking with ironing boards, pillow, all kinds of things. Also - as far as the mail is concerned - if you go to Power School grad you will see where the mail room is located. It is in the Rickover Center, but I think normally one person from each class is appointed to pick up mail or the card to indicate a pkg needs to be picked up. If that person does not go, then your sailor will not get their mail. I also always let my son know to be expecting something, but there were still times when things didn't get picked up quite as timely as I wished.

Steven is apparently pulling your leg, Maria. You were right - it does mean "Fireman". You really should let him have it... :)

I think the address is more like a post office box kind of thing. Alex said they don't get mail delivered to their rooms.

They will send him a message that he has a package to pick up. It just might take a while for them to find him. Then he will need to find time to pick it up. I'm sure he'll get it. My son got his without any trouble. He was looking for it to arrive because it had his cell phone in it.

When they first get to GC they are in indoc and they have a temporary address. I'd wait until he has a more permanent address.

MaMdl's advice goes for when they get into the fleet as well. The US Postal service only goes as far as New York. Then the package goes to the Fleet Post Office system. So if you overnight a package to an FPO it will get to NY overnight, but not get any special handling by the Navy. Welcome to the wonderful world of the Military.

I thoroughly enjoyed my sailor's time at home last week. It was perfectly sunny and warm Michigan weather - we'd had a monsoon the week before and we're having another monsoon since he left. I sent him a box today with some cold remedies in it. From the sound of the posts on the last 7 pages, he just might need them. I pray the sailors who've been sick get well.

As for plane tickets, I booked right from the NWA website. But someone commented that calling an airline direct might give you an advantage and I agree. I tried several combinations of airports for good pricing. In most cases, it's less expensive to fly out of Myrtle Beach to most major airports. But my sailor doesn't have a car so I booked out of Charleston and had him fly into a major airport in our area. We had to drive 2 hours to pick him up even though another airport was closer. It's just the way the pricing went. He sure looked good arriving in his Navy uniform and it did afford him good treatment. I can also understand that it could make the sailors a target for terrorism. Every flight I've been on I've seen soldiers in uniform and it lifts my spirits. Next time I'll ask him to check to see if there are any restrictions on flying in his uniform. God bless you all and all the nuke sailors!
