When Alex said the same thing to me, I told him to say "Thank you" for all the sailors and soldiers who can't be thanked because they are in Irag or Afganistan or deployed at sea. Now that Alex is deployed, his brother who is on shore duty, says Thank You on behalf of his brother.

Kate, Alex didn't have to travel in his uniform back when he came home. However, if they run into travel problems with the airlines, etc., they get more help if they are in uniform. A friend of mine's son had another passenger give up his seat on a plane because her son was in uniform.

Marie--funny about the towels and sheets. We got our sailor some when we were down there, and also splurged on a memory foam twin mattress topper. He really liked that! Think it was under $50 at Wal Mart.

NY Navy Girlfiriend, I agree with Shel completely, Having been a Navy wife myself. So one more piece of advice. Put the time you are appart to good use. Go to college, do volunteer work, keep busy. Not only will you keep yourself occupied but it will give you plenty to share with him when you write or e-mail. Sailors love news from home. Try to keep track of his friends as well, so you can let him know what they are doing.

NY Navy Girlfriend, If you go to the graduation wear the most comfortable shoes you can find. A good pair of running shoes is a good idea. You need to walk half way across the Base and then back to the front gate. Also take a light jacket even if graduation is in the summer. It can get cool (or cold) in the building where they have the graduation. Don't forget a camera, if you can get one with a film option with sound, you can record the graduation. We did that and its great to keep. My son was suppose to be grad and go, then at the last minute they changed it and we had the entire weekend with him. Good Luck.

When it comes to booking flights, it sometimes pays to check flights from neighboring airports. For instance, if your sailor can get a ride to Myrtle Beach, you might find it cheaper to fly from there instead of Charleston. DirectAir flies out of MB to several other airports, usually non-stop for around $150 round trip. Perhaps you would be willing to drive to an airport 2 hours from home to retrieve your sailor instead of a closer airport to save some bucks. I have booked flights at the airline's website and also on Hotwire.

Hi, Gail, Scott is an MM. Would the different rates take power school together? I'm sure their paths have crossed. Keep in touch.
