Hi Melanie, My son is also stationed in Groton. He's on the Miami, but we live here in Pittsburgh. Its nice to know there is a sub named after our city. If you ever get out this way I'd be glad to give you a tour.

Hi all, my son will be PIR on 6/26 in GL. He has written me that he leaves for GC on 6/30 to begin A School. He also wrote that he volunteered for sub duty.
Does anyone know if there is an extra school that they have to go to for subs?
If so, will this be done during nuclear schooling or after? I thought I was getting myself up to speed on everything and now he has thrown this monkey wrench into it. God love him! I'm just so confused right now. He said he would be getting his rate this week so I won't know what it is until his next letter. He is hoping for MM.

Lori, You might want to look at USAA for insurance. It is the company that only insures military. They are great to deal with esp. when your sailor gets to the Fleet. They just called me to tell me that there was a problem with Alex's policy. The payment plan he set up has stopped paying his premiums. Rather than cancel his insurance they went over several options with me, so his car and renters insurance won't lapse while he is deployed. They are also the only company that will insure personal items that sailors take with them on their ship or sub.

Hi Carole, I agree with everything carols just told you. I would add one more thing. If you have dental insurance, have your son's wisdom teeth taken out before he leaves for BC. If he doesn't have them taken out before he leaves, they will take them out during BC. It is much easier on him if there is someone to take care of him at home. At basic, they just send them back to the ship (barracks) and leave them there for a few days. Alex (who had his taken out at home) still complains about the mess the guys made when they came back from having dental surgery.

Hi Carole
You will want to join the DEPPERS group. Also, go ahead and join Boot camp moms if you have not already.

DEPs usually have set times to meet with their recruiters every week. Your recruit should already have a book (small spiral bound) and/or Cd that says what they need to learn and the physical training to continue. If they need any swimming lessons, this summer would be great to learn.

As for PIR, you will find many hints by going to the search box in the upper right hand corner --probably days worth of reading!

Is your recruit in school until December? Or is it just because the recruiting office has been told there is not an opening until then? Our sailor was given a Nov. date last year, but got a call on Mother's Day (yes) and left on June 12th. So, be prepared.

Good Luck and we are proud of you and your family serving the United States!

ADN, Yes they have to move out the same day they graduate. The U-Haul rental places do a very big business that day. Alex and his roommates rented a truck and put all their stuff together for the move to NY. They had a few days to get their, so they stopped and stayed with us for 3 days. It was great to have a house full of people again.

Champsmom, WOOHOO!!!!! Congrats! Do they have a place lined up in NY? Just curious about how they manage this move to NY.

Prototype is tough and is the most stressful of the lot. Mostly because of the schedule. The sailors are on 12 hour rotating shifts. They do 7 days of like 8am to 8pm. Then they switch to something like 4pm to 4 am with a day off in between. Then midnight to noon after 2 days off. Then 3 days off until the rotation starts again. I'm not sure the times are right but they are close. There are constant drills, start ups and shut downs. They cover everything that needs to be done to keep a reactor running and everything that could possibly go wrong. They get a little nutty after a while. And it lasts for 6 months. But this training is the reason there has never been a reactor accident on a US Navy ship or sub.

Linda, The time between A school and Power School is called T-Track. Sometimes it is nice for them to have a break from the stress of so much studying. And then after a while of clean, scrub, polish and repeat, they are ready to dive into Power School.
