Laura - he does have insurance on his own - it has something to do with SC, and the rates, and whatever, so he couldn't stay under our insurance. Now that he is in NY, I haven't asked him about how much he is paying.

I want to say he has insurance through the Navy, or military, somehow. His permanent address is listed as our home, and his vehicle is registered here in MN, but his insurance is through the military I believe.

Try USAA insurance after checking other quotes. It had the best rates for our sailor before he turned 21. He also used them for rental for his apartment.

My son came home and got his, then drove back down to SC. I know some families have driven the car down. That is really the only things I can think that you can do. Any other way is going to cost an exteme amount of money and not worth it.

Wow, after reading all these posts, I am glad I didn't have to do any of this shipping stuff!!!!!

When Spence came home he picked up his car and all his stuff and drove down to GC with everything. So that was nice. And when he graduates from NY (hopefully this year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I am going out for graduation, and then driving back home and he is going to leave some stuff here, cuz you can't bring anything on the carrier.

Good luck with all your shipping needs - doesn't sound fun!

Lea - yes they have coffeemakers, toasters, some pots and pans and dishes. We were there for Thanksgiving and did not have some serving pieces, but made to with what was there. If there is something special you want to make, I would take that pan or be prepared to buy if necessary. We bought a set of nested mixing bowls from Dollar General just up the road and left if when we left as well as some spatulas. Also bought some of the 9x13 disposable pans to use. There were dish towels, potholders, dish soap furnished as well as a basket next to the coffeemaker with a couple packs of coffee to get you started. There is dishwasher, washer and dryer, over, 4 burner stove, refrigerator - normal size kitchen appliances. Any other questions, ask away. Carol (Carols kitchen) has stayed several times so may have answers for you also. When are you going??

Lori - I'll second the suggestion to check out the forum mentioned above (nuke ship or nuke sub?) - there is lots of good stuff there, especially the stuff I didn't post :). You'll probably be able to tell that I'm not exactly objective on the issue - but I'll clarify the motion sickness issue you brought up. Carriers are such large vessels that they roll very little - motion sickness is not an issue on them, except maybe if they are caught in a storm (which they can normally avoid, at least the really big ones). Submerged submarines are very stable platforms, but entering and leaving port they must be on the surface, until they are off the continental shelf to submerge. During the surface transit to the dive point, submarines roll a great deal, because of the shape of the hull. The length of the surface transit varies depending on the port. I was a west coast sailor, and none of the west coast ports are too bad, now that we no longer have subs based in the SF Bay area. That one was a brutal transit. Bangor is a long one also, but most of it is not on the open ocean, so it's not bad either. I've never sailed from an east coast port, but I suspect that Groton boats may have a long surface transit to get clear of Long Island Sound before they can dive.

Diana, My list isn't too long. Comments were made that Rock City Falls and Saratoga Springs were both nice and close to the base. Also have a web site for apartments and a property management co. that both are in Saratoga Springs and got good reviews from sailors.

Birdy, My son just started Power School but he would like to go Ballston Spa for prototype. I have just kept a little list of tips on places mentioned here. When the time comes I would just give it him and then let him figure it out!!! Only 51 days until he comes home for his brothers wedding!!!!!!!

Birdy, Welcome! You probably have a little different perspective than moms and your insights would be interesting!!

Kathleen, Should my sailor go to Ballston Spa for prototype, I have kept a few notes from previous postings about renting there. I will add to my list a big DO NOT USE for Brown Realty. Thanks for the tip!! You may have saved my sailor a big headache.
