Dorothy, We are in Carol Stream, 33 miles west of the center of the city. How did you go from So. Holland to the country??

Dorothy - once your son gets to GC, he will be able to take the duty van to the mall and Best Buy. there are a couple other stops - don't remember what they are. Another thing to look at - you can go to the NEX website. You can purchase a gift card and mail it to him. They have a huge selection of cards you can customize for almost any occasion and have mailed directly to him. As said before, Subway will be his best friend. Most of the calls I received were on his way to or from Subway, or while doing laundry. Just keep up with this site - you will learn so much.

Welcome Dorothy, You may have to be patient for him to get his internet set up. Comcast is only allowed on base Thursdays (I think that's what my son said). Well anyway it might take a couple of weeks before he is up and running for email. BTW, have a great time at PIR. Take lots of kleenex with you. Pat

He should look into getting a laptop once he is there. The Navy Exchange carries them for less than the civilian stores. Sure they can be shipped, but packages are not put directly into the hands of the sailors, they go through a mailroom. Retrieving the mail is one of the biggest headaches a sailor has, and frustrating for the person on the shipping end. Do not send anything overnight express, ever, a waste of money in most cases. The delivery services can't access much of the base. A cell phone should be okay to mail. Personally, I'd not ship a laptop to a military base without trying to send other packages first to check the way the mail system works for that command/school.

I am not familiar with the NEX there, but do consider researching what is available through them. The AFB near us has laptops at amazing prices, good brands too. If it is a gift, perhaps you can give him an NEX giftcard and let him select his own? Unless you can get good deals otherwise?

Carol, do you remember which ship is at Patriot's Point?

Donna, Our son was grad and go to Goose Creek. After PIR, we had enough time to go to "ricky heaven" and had pizza with him. Then we also met him at the airport. You can get a special security pass to go to the gate and wait with him. His flight was delayed twice so we got to spend an extra 5 hrs. with him.

Elisa, Address.. first line your sailors name, 101 NNPTC Circle, Goose Creek, South Carolina 29445-6324. This address will get a letter to them eventually, might take a few extra days.

LOL, I have six inches of new snow sitting on my poor daffodils here in Utah. Good thing they're hardy!

We are under a Winter Storm Watch here in MN - I am soooo done with winter, but this stuff won't stay, so I am not to worried about it.

I do want it to start getting nicer though, so that once it is actually 'spring' I can get outside and start doing yardwork!!!

Tina,
There is now a nuclear powered aircraft carrier (USS George Washington) homeported in Yokosuka. If your husband could get assigned there after prototype, maybe that could simplify your situation?
