I wanted to add on to the discussion about off base living after PS. Our sailor and roommates opted to get a furnished apartment even though it cost a little more. They also opted to have a nicer place since they don't know when they would have this opportunity again. The parents bought/gave them the basics like pots and pans, towels, etc. with the understanding that they will donate what they are not taking with them to the next round of Nukes. As I am writing this it is dawning on my that it might be a good thing there's no furniture as I think the car will be stacked floor to roof with all of his books! Did I mention my sailor is an avid reader :)

Hey Sea Sisters (and Brothers, too)!

I was out of town for 2 weeks, and it’s taken me almost a week to catch up on all my emails and N4M messages. Wow, y’all were a chatty bunch while I was gone. I love it! I especially loved seeing folks’ bios, so (quite belatedly) here’s mine:

I’m a single mom (divorced) living in an urban part of western Oregon. I have 2 kids, ages 27 and 23. My youngest, A, is the Nuke. He left for boot camp on Jan 27, 2015 and had PIR on March 27, 2015. Immediately after finishing prototype (in GC) he was picked up for STA-21 (Seaman to Admiral - 21st century), the enlisted to officer program. He is now getting his Electrical Engineering degree at Iowa State and will graduate & get his commission next May. He will then have a minimum 5 year commitment to the Navy, including another stint in GC doing the Nuke pipeline as an officer. As so many others have said, I couldn’t be more proud of the person he’s becoming through the Navy! I have to be careful not to brag about him too much in front of others, he’s just that awesome. LOL! I’m sure y’all feel the same about your own sailors.

My oldest kiddo, E, lives about 12 blocks from me and works in nutrition services at a local hospital. Due to a variety of circumstances beyond anyone’s control, E is still figuring out life, and being an adult. I greatly admire E’s grace, poise, honesty and integrity in navigating a world that doesn’t always appreciate people’s differences. What an amazing person!

I’m a postpartum doula, a vocation I came to late in life. I love it!! It’s amazing to have a job that feeds my soul, pretty much each and every day. In my spare time I love to watch soccer, especially women’s soccer. I’m very lucky that both my kids share this passion. It’s something we’ve done together since they were quite young. I also enjoy swimming, doing cross-stitch, and Netflix binges.

I’d love to meet up with any navy moms who live or visit this neck of the woods! Let me know if you’re interested.

Plus, we had a bad experience when I shipped US mail to the base. It actually goes to a main mail station and then gets cleared to an agent at base. Our items were lost and I spent 60 days trying to file a complaint and it's still under investigation because they don't want to pay the insurance claim until they confirm they can't recover the lost items. They agreed the items were lost, just still waiting for the compensation.

Thankfully it wasn't anything that couldn't be replaced, just took more time.

Well, our Nuke went to Pearl, so he had his vehicle shipped, but nothing else, so all he could take was five packed bags/cartons of items. He called the airline and we ended up checking these lockable totes that stack on wheels. (The airline gave us the dimensions and weight), but we could have done a better job of packing some of the quality items like baseball/softball glove, cleats, favorite frying pan, sheets, etc.  We had a little spare room and he actually only took three out of five checked items, so my advice would be to maximize what you're allowed.

Just throwing this out there. When it comes to moving into housing after Power School, a lot of nukes go minimal. They look around to see what other sailors are selling so they don't have to buy a bunch of stuff just to get rid of it themselves. I've even heard of sailors sleeping on air mattresses rather than getting an expensive bed. The sailors figure out what they want to spend their money on and go from there. Mine was married so his concerns were different from a single. I'm just saying they may not care about stuff that we as moms might.

And nukes get a hefty signing bonus for re-enlisting. Also, it's pro-rated over the additional time added to their contract.

Comment by CSW on June 24, 2019 at 4:35pm

One other thing I recently learned is that other rates outside the Nuke rate do NOT get a signing bonus if they star re-enlist so it can get quite touchy when nukes advance when they star re-enlist and get to at least wear the advanced rate and receive the signing bonus.

CSW, thanks for sharing your son’s experience as I am now able to prepare my son that he might have a wait before he can move off base after he ranks up in August. I’m pretty sure he has the impression that it will happen right away! One thing about Nukes is they get used to living off base during Prototype and then it’s a little bit of a rude awakening once they’re assigned to a ship!
