My son was contemplating the same thing while in GC. I looked up a few local jewelry stores online, but he said that his SLPO at the time recommended going with a big chain jewelry store. The rationale was that they were more likely to get any needed repairs or cleaning done if it was a merchant with multiple locations. I don’t necessarily agree with that myself, but I can understand the thinking behind it. Good luck & congratulations in advance.

This probably seems like an odd thing to ask about, but does anyone know of a good, reputable jewelry store in the GC/Charleston area.? My son wants to get a diamond for his girlfriend and I'd hate for him to get ripped off. You hear all sorts of bad stories about jewelry stores around bases.  He is set on getting engaged now rather than waiting.

KayCee, I sent you a friend request. Sounds like your sailor may be headed where mine is.

I have a couple of questions that I hope someone can help me with concerning newly qualified sailors. Here is the situation....sailor is qualified and Prototype graduation is soon. He has his orders and they have him staying in GC through the last week in August. Question #1- The lease for the house he is renting is in his name but his orders are two months out so the lease agent won't cancel his lease even though the other two roommates leave next week. He cannot afford this home on his own. Is there someone on base he should talk to for help with this issue.

Question #2- He was told he can't get on base housing because he will only be in GC for two months. He hasn't been given any guidance on where to look for a room to rent or someone looking for a roommate. Is there a place that advertises rooms for rent or roommates needed? IF he can't get out of his lease maybe he can rent the other two bedrooms.

WearsLargeHats and B’sNukeMoM - thank you both! I need to get a notebook and get all my notes in to one place. Then I might know what I still need to follow up on! I don’t know what I would do without this site and all the wonderful moms!!!

And of course when they are on deployment you basically answer each and every call you get!  You just never know when it might be your sailor calling and maybe isn't using his/her own phone.  You can always hang up on a telemarketer!  You should both also download WhatsApp and figure it out before he deploys.  We used that when B was deployed and also when the youngest and his gf went to Austria.  Worked well.....they just have to have wifi to use it.

Submom, make sure your Sailor puts you on the ombudsman's contact list, and try to get in with the Family Readiness Group. Boomers rarely make port calls. Don't expect much communication when they are on submarine deployment. They disappear for weeks. But that 3AM call from Guam is priceless. (Well, not exactly, he was able to take his phone, and the plan was set up for $10/day for most countries. Phone rules vary by command.)

B'sNukeMoM⚓️MMN - thank you very much! I know he has paperwork in order for most (if not all things) but we do not have any copies or how to get to the right person for information should we need it. As far as free time goes - it is probably equal to what they have while in GC. Rolling eyes as I type- which is very tricky to do :)

SubMom - Here's a checklist that should be very helpful:

Single Sailor Deployment Readiness Checklist

It's geared more towards deployment but a lot of it is good info to have even when heading to the fleet.  A passport is not always required but it is definitely a good idea to have.  B's command told them to get one and he did - it can come in handy on deployment if they have some free time (insert eye roll here lol!).

Is there a link that's been posted or any seasoned Moms that have insight as to what we should do prior to our sailor going to fleet - thinking POA, passports, how do you know when your sailor calls when they are at sea, etc. Also wondering if there are specific ports for fast attack vs. boomer. I welcome any insight and know some information needs to be sent via private message. Thanks!!!
