New Adventure - when thinking about presents, keep in mind that they will be moving a lot. As I mentioned earlier my son had his Kindle and then bought a small size computer that he keeps in its original box (reinforced with duck tape) and travels in the backpack they were issued at BC. They are not allowed extra electronics in the Rickover when studying and they are restricted on the kind of watch they can wear, some buy the G-shock, I think. My son needed a new watch in BC and just bought a simple Casio black watch. Everything is black, watches, umbrellas (much needed in GC).

If you want to get something for his BEQ (Bachelor Enlisted Quarters) it is best to wait until he gets to GC and asks you for something.

Thanks everyone for your responses back on my son and the red shirt.

I will have to look at the red shirts. I am home more than I am out and about, so I have evolved into a T-shirt mom and yes, I may have a hard time deciding which one to buy.

FLmom - there are a few of you Sunshine State gals in this group.

I have my flag flying outside my house. I had to listen to the radio news this morning to be reminded that it was Flag Day as well as President Trump's b'day.

Happy Friday!  I've got my red on ;-D

Chipmunk - so happy your sons notebook was found and returned to him!  I'm sure he is relieved!

As for the shirts - there are lots of places out there to get them. Armed Forces Gear has some nice ones and so does Cafe Press.  They have so many to choose from now that you might have a hard picking just one lol!

Thanks to all the moms out there that post, answer questions, and share experiences. This has been an invaluable resource for me, as I didn't grow up in a military family and my kid is the first to serve us proud. We are learning SO much about Navy service and our son, who has grown from his experiences so far. ( currently in Prototype.)  I don't get to post that much, but read  the posts of experience and advice. Again, Thank you. (FL is my state, not initials, so hello to my fellow Navy  Mom Floridians as well)

I haven't been on this week - there's a lot to catch up on!

Chipmunk - so glad your sailor found his notebook. There are certain things that you just never want to lose.

MoMom - congrats to your son!

Following up on the car conversation- we are in MI (one of the highest states for insurance) and our son is on our policy. The title, insurance and registration are in my husband's name with our son listed as a dedicated driver to that specific car. We opted to keep him on our insurance as we have a wonderful agent and very good rates. Also, he is 19 so he is a "high risk" no matter who he insures through. After talking about all of the options for registration, insurance and title we opted to not change anything. He is currently in GC waiting to start Prototype. When he arrived at GC he was told everything had to be in his name but when he explained that the car was not his they said he just had to bring in the registration and proof of insurance. Once he graduates Proto and get his orders we will research and see if we need to change anything.

New Adventure they may have cell phone, laptop, Kindle, or tablet when you meet them at airport- before flying to GC. My son bought his laptop once in GC but had his Kindle for reading. He also downloads audio books from our library to listen to on his phone.

ProudofK - Thanks! He calls it his lifeline. The Navy veteran that gave him his first one instructed him in how to use it and make it work for him. He took it to heart.

Does anyone know when or if our sailors can have a personal tablet?  I know not until after boot camp at the earliest.  My soon to be sailor reads all the time on theirs but it is old an dying.  A special occasion is coming up and that might be a good gift.

Any other gift ideas.  It is so hard not knowing what they will have access to or room for.

JayDee6589 - Thanks!! I had not made it as far as Google yet! :-)  I will look them up. My red capris are clean so I am sporting them today with my blue sunscreen shirt - However, we have rain for the last day of my son's day camp, which means their council fire is most likely going to be under the roof with a fake fire. It is his first year as a counselor at our local Camp Fire camp. My oldest to my youngest have all had their years there and like Mammagoose, the empty nest is drawing closer.

Chipmunk, by simply googling "Red Friday Shirts" I easily found several sites such as Armed Forces Gear, Etsy, and Amazon, just to name a few.  My daughters FRG sold some at one time and I've seen them from other ships too.
