SubMom - it does sound like maybe your son needs glasses.  I'm sorry he is having headaches - on top of their grueling class schedule I'm sure that's not something he wants to deal with. Unbelievable that there is a 6 month wait!  I honestly don't have an answer as to whether or not he can even go off base to get his eyes checked - anyone else know?

On another note, our sailor has had headaches and is thinking he needs his eyes checked. With that said, he was told there is a 6 month wait for optical. Does anyone know of a good optometrist in Charleston (surrounding area)? If he gets his eyes checked off base he knows he will have to pay out of pocket but I wonder if he can have the RX filled on base? Thanks ladies!

ProudofK; CSW and Anmarie - thank you very much for the restaurant suggestions. I cannot believe that this will be trip #4 and there are still so many places we've never even heard of!

Thanks JayDee659.

Partnerinwine we did eat at the Swig n Swine and it was very good. We ate at the Charleston one with our son. He said he liked the one in Summerville better even.

partnerinwine - I was chatting with another nuke mom a while back and they had gone to Swig & Swine and absolutely loved it.  If you want BBQ that would definitely be a place to visit.

JayDee659- I totally agree. Having an Insurance company that is good to their customers is the priority.

Comment by partnerinwine on February 28, 2019 at 3:39pm

I also recommend USAA! They have been our banking/insurance company for over 20 years. We have only had good experiences with them.

I guess I have officially left the Boot Camp group. My son is in his 3rd week at A School. He seems all settled in with his new routine. We love being able to FaceTime him on the weekends and sneak a text in here and there. What a change from Boot Camp :)

I love reading all of your posts. We are planning a trip to Charleston as soon as school lets out for summer. My husband and I actually met in Charleston while he was stationed on a sub and I was at MUSC. We can't wait to show our sons around. I'm sure so much has changed since then. I've been taking notes on your recommendations!

So, our son will turn 21 in a few months. We are hoping to organize a BBQ dinner for him and his friends on the weekend. Any thoughts on a good restaurant that either delivers or that has a space for a group to eat? Has anyone eaten at Swig and Swine? Do any of your Nuke's have a favorite spot?

Comment by JayDee659 on February 28, 2019 at 2:51pm

ProudParent, my husband is an insurance adjuster.  He says that USAA is one of the best companies out there based upon the way they treat their clients and they way they pay claims.  So many people are so busy price shopping that they can forget what they're paying for.  When it comes time to collect for damage, they're generally disappointed by the way the claim is handled with the "cheap" companies.  You get what you pay for.  That's my two cents on insurance.  If you want my full opinion PM me as I worked in insurance for 10 years and my husband is an adjuster.

MichianaMom, my Nukes have a place near Virginia Beach Town Center, Aragona Village.  Their chief in prototype helped them pick out a safe area and they went with his recommendation as he'd lived in VA for awhile.  They're both pleased with the area and I've liked it when I visited.  With that being said, they purchased the house sight unseen when it came up for sale as property moves fast in this area.  They left themselves an "out" based upon inspection.

JayDee659 just wondering what area of Norfolk your Nuke and Nuke-in-Law live. My son is looking to purchase a home as he will be stationed there after deployment. Anyone else have any suggestions? Thanks!
