Rime, the ombudsman can't talk to you unless you are on your sailor's contact list. I am not sure of the process, but do make sure that your son makes you known to the ombudsman. As for an address, there is an FPO, but in all likelihood the letter will just chase around from port to port because submarine movements are closely guarded and subject to change. If you can get in with the FRG, sometimes there will be personnel meeting the boat who can take a bag of mail. All that mostly applies to SSNs. SSBNs would only get mail on underway replenishment or personnel transfer, which is to say maybe not at all.

Email is more likely to get to him, though not quickly, and don't expect a prompt reply. There is a standard format for the email address, but I need to check before posting here. Better safe. There are some discussions/documents here and on the SubMoms group, but note that Sailor Mail was retired a couple years back, so some of the limitations have changed.

A big congratulation to everyone who has passed comps! What a huge accomplishment. Big hugs to those sailors and their families.

On another note, I know quite a few people have stayed at the Villas on Base but was wondering if anyone can tell me about the Inns of Charleston. Also, my dad is an Air Force veteran - can he reserve either of these or can  just active/retired military reserve them?

Rime..also there is very little communication from them, but my son told me to keep.sending emails it really helps keep their spirits up even though often he can't respond.

Rime...the only way to contact your sailor while underway or deployed is through an email address.  They do not get mail. Our sailor sent us an email while underway thus giving a way to.communicate with him. I would think your ombudsman would have this address.  When they get deployed,  you prepare a halfway box to be given to them halfway through the deployment.  Also important to send an envelope filled with cards they can open at different times since they cannot receive mail. I hope this helps. I would reach out to.your sailors ombudsman again. They should have the boats email address.

I do have a question for sub moms who have sailors already through the pipe. When trying to find out from the ombudsman an address to send mail for underway, do we use our last name to let her know who we are? I've asked for an address noting who our sailor was (but not by name), but have heard nothing back. I think they may have already left now, but we still have no address in which to even send him notes. He's been on this base since October- and unfortunately things there, we've been told, are done a bit different. But I must say since qualifying here, he does sound much better! :-)

So happy for all you who've sailors now with prototype completed! For those wondering what graduation to attend, especially if you can't afford all, I'd also say power school is the must see one. Our son had leave shortly after both A and prototype and recommended we not try to attend since he'd be home soon and he had duty the day after A school, and wasn't certain he'd pass prototype and be able to graduate on time until three days before graduation. A school is small, and he said very few had family there; same with prototype- graduation for most of them was so up in the air.

My sailor completed all his prototype testing and checkouts! We are so happy for him. His next step will be submarine welding school in Groton. Anybody have any info on this?

Anmarie, I am not sure about the shifts.  When she gets off work today I'll see what information she can give to me.

As far as graduations go, I had planned on attending all of them.  The Tuesday before PS grad the entire city of Charleston was under a mandatory evacuation in front of a hurricane.  No PS graduation.  They returned from evac and moved on to Proto.

My daughter moved off base into a house with 3 other Nukes during PS.  They seem to band together into groups and just move without warning.  After she got married she and her husband got a cute little place of their own.
