NDM - thanks for your honesty; sometimes parents forget that their children are independent people - that's where I am. I never imagined any of my children in the military because I grew up in the Vietnam era. Both my father and father-in-law served but we children grew up feeling differently. When my son joined the Navy, my husband and I were both surprised (even though I had facetiously suggested that he become a Nuke because he was too smart for college). Who knew the Navy would be the perfect fit for him, although a part of me thinks he has done so well just to rub it in his parents' faces. Anyway, my point is that our children somehow seem to find what they need, either because of or in spite of, their parent's desires. Your son will do well in his way and on his terms. Godspeed to him!

Not da Mama please let us know where he gets assigned and how he does.

Thank you all for all the kind words.

No News is good news and patience is a virtue.

He hasn’t answered my text yet, but he has been on FB, so I know he is still alive.  I think he just needs time to SLEEP and breathe.  He knows I have his back and will call if/when he needs me.

Complete honesty reveals, he never joined the Navy that I wanted him to.  I used to be a Boatswain's Mate on a DD ( tin can ) Home ported in Charleston for 2 years, during the heady days of Viet Nam.  Small, fast, Anti Submarine Warfare.  Had the absolute time of my life traveling the world, sewing my oats, never out more than 5 days, shallow water ports, only 350 guys ( I mean SHIPMATES) a real life fantasy adventure where you find yourself and grow.  Not only did we steam east from the east coast through the Caribbean to the Red Sea, my Destroyer Squadron  patrolled Brazil, Africa, India, Pakistan, Persian Gulf, Southeast Asia to Japan and my Mother received Gold, Brass, Silk, Mahogany and rare gems from all my stops through the FPO. We were gone for 9 months. That was the experience I wanted for him/us.  Yes, I have trouble passing world maps without stopping to point.

Mrs. NDM and I agree and blame the recruiter ( no malice ) When he saw the test scores and waved the $$$$$$, I saw my Son swoon and agree.  I told him the Navy would point him to what he was good at, and he became a Nuke.  I never really liked carriers - too many officers, but my Father was an ABM on the Yorktown at Coral Sea in WWII, so it would continue the tradition.  Like Martial Arts, once he committed, I supported him 100%.  My guilt stems from the arm twisting I did to make him talk to the recruiter in the first place.

My research shows if you need to be denuked, this is the best way.  So for me, I am disappointed that he fell short of his target but I raised him on “Aim High – even if you miss, you’re still among the stars”.  So it was not a wasted experience.  Sorry about being long-winded, guess I needed the therapy tonite.  But thanks again for all the Love and support…it is appreciated, and I will still be around and keep you informed.  New starts, new opportunities.  The Rollercoaster, I mean, the Adventure continues.

OOO not Da Mama  So sad for you.

Talked to my son today and he said that today he drove one friend to the airport today who graduated a School for MM and is on leave and he had to go say goodbye to another friend who was leaving Nuke program to be reassigned somewhere else. This was the only sailor who could out run mine in PT, My sailor said this kid started out doing good then lately he just lost heart and interest. At lease he is sticking with the navy My son said he wants something more physical as he is a crazy buff short guy, He wants to try for special ops.

Dan's mom - thanks for that! My son lost about 20lbs through A-school and Nuke-school because eating wasn't convenient or appetizing. He's been in BS for a week and eating from home. I'm glad to hear there are better food options.

Just wanted to say this is a great site.  I think I am more informed than my SR. This is my first post but I have been reading posts for several months.  My son will be in the nuke program and leaves for Great Lakes 1/14.  Dittersmom and OncNurse1900 it seems our kids will be there at the same time.

NF mom, B'snukemom, and Tom, thank you for your posts I will do some more reading. I relate to the lightbulb moment. My son who joined the navy had a light turn on when he was17 also. He is so level headed and practical, that it almost scares me.
