COTwinSalorsMom - Hi, no, they are not twins, just brother and sister who look a lot alike! They are almost 2 years apart. He decided to join the Navy, and convinced her to join as well. And then they both tested into NF. We got lucky in that they both left for BC on the same day. ;-)
Mark - thanks for the explanation. I have a lot to learn about this field, but I think the SRs and their brother will have much in common to discuss. The oldest son has a degree in Power Plant Tech, and then had to take a number of classes and pass a prototype test before becoming a UO. Sounds like this will be somewhat along those lines? Oldest son and I talk much about the future of coal-fired plants and the merits of nuclear. And yes, there are a lot of ex-military personnel! :-)
Not Da Moma, I sent you a private Message,
but a couple of questions:
Not Da Mama wrote:
"... didn't get 100% on last watch ..."
Where is your son on his quals, has he taken the written comprehensive at least once ?
Has he passed all parts of the written comprehensive ?
When you say "didn't get 100%" on last watch, is there a watch everyone has to get 100% on, or was that just the percentage he needed to bring his average up ( I do not even know for sure if I recall correctly about averages on watches ).
When you said final watch, had he completed all his watches but one, or was that his final shot at bringing the average up?
B'snukemom - My son is in Ballston Spa. After PS he was on grad hold for months. He was sent to Kings Bay for a few months after spending months in Charleston. He finally made it to NY but still waited for awhile.
As for the holidays it looks like there is no stand down. My son told me that he cannot come home until the day after Christmas. It does not seem right to postpone Christmas so I am planning on celebrating it twice.
I don't know if there's a Maggiano's Little Italy down there but if so, they are doing it. Try Toast too. That's a great restaurant over in the shopping area with wonderful food. Good Luck!
Hello All!
So we are driving our son's car to him at GC, and will be spending Thanksgiving with him. We wanted to cook him a real Thanksgiving dinner for him, but the Foster Creek Villa's were all booked up. We have a nice room at Staybridge Suites with a kitchen, but it doesn't have an oven to cook a turkey in.
Does anyone know of a restaurant or grocery store near North Charlestone/Goose Creek that has a full thanksgiving dinner for carry out? We found one restaurant, but it is located on the west side of SC - so too far away.
Any help will be great!
Thanks!
Maureen
8isenuff - your instincts (by your last sentences) are exactly right. The "watch" idea is the same for your older son. In the exam, you have to demonstrate your knowledge of the operating procedures for the equipment running on your watchstation. The power plants are organized the same way - unsurprising really, because so many in power plants are Navy vets.
B'snukemom(MM3 Power 1305-8)-- My sailor was in BS for Prototype. Some of his PS grad buddies went directly there after PS. Mine got 10 days off and then was on hold in GC and then went up a couple of months later. He was in the middle of Prototype in BS last Xmas and got a 4 day weekend for Christmas and another 4 day weekend for New Years. Since both holidays are on Wednesday this year, who knows what they will decide. I know it can be so frustrating. We had to drive our sailor to the airport at 5 am in the morning on Christmas morning so he would be back in time to be at work by the next day. Good luck
