COTwinSailor'sMom, I don't know that it ever gets easier, I think they (and we) adjust. My son is about halfway through power school and is doing okay so far.

Thank you everyone for all the helpful info on the car registration and insurance.  I've sent an email to my son with the info and hopefully we can get a decision made sometime soon!

Hi everyone!  My laptop decided to lose it's little mind and blank out the screen, so I've been offline for the last little bit.  Today it suddenly decided to play nice - and I'm taking advantage of it!

Our sailor was home with us for the first time since he left for BC back in November. He went back to GC yesterday, but it was wonderful having him!

The car he'd had since high school was developing some interesting personality quirks, so we helped him shop for a car while he was home. He found a nice 2011 Mazda3 in a nice blue, and he called us when he got back to GC to tell us how nice it was to drive home.

On a related note - we shopped ALL of the insurance options available to us, and USAA was not only the cheapest one...it was ONE THIRD the price Geico quoted us, and HALF the price Progressive quoted.  USAA ROCKS!  LOL

The title being in your name is a problem.  He will have the same problems that you have, and will have to constantly explain that this is his parents car.  He may not be able to get the smog exemption since it's your car. Additionally, I never notify insurance companies until after I've relocated.  Over the years, since I've had a drivers license, I've lived in Hawaii, California, Florida, N.C., and Pennsylvania.  Here's the reason that I don't.  I notified Geico that I was relocating from California to Florida a week in advance.  I gave them complete information including addresses and dates.  Upon arrival in Florida, I received a letter terminating my insurance due to relocation, and it was effective the date I left California, so for a week I had been driving without insurance and didn't even know it.

B'snukemom - we are from CA and we shipped my sons jeep to him back in March. He got his insurance through USAA it was the best rate. He did not have to reregister the jeep in SC. We kept it registered in CA. Regarding smog, he just needs to fill out a form from the DMV that makes it exempt from smog due to it being out of CA for military personnel he would send that form in with the registration payment

Packages to NNPTC mail room actually worked better than mail for my son.  The problem with mail was that  it went through chain of command meaning staff Petty Officer, and student leadership, and then handed out at roll call.

Packages stayed in the mail room and the students just picked them up.  If you send them with a tracking number then text your student when they are signed for in the mail room, he/she does not need to wait for the snail mail notification to get to them through the same bottle necks as the mail  goes through.

Anyway, the NNPTC mail room worked better than the Private PO Box package pick up hours for our son's A-School study schedule.   But his Private PO Box worked better for mail, because he could check it 24x7.

On the LES there is an address which will be in SC and also a code which indicates his state for Income tax purposes - that should be say CA ( where he enlisted ) unless he changed it on purpose.

Technically they are not eligible for the personal property tax exemption if any one who is not in the military with them is a registered owner, but I do not believe they have anyway to collect unless he re-registers the car in South Carolina - but I am not sure about the later as it did not apply in my son's case - he was the only one on the WA registration / tittle.

Thanks NF mom - I think it will be easier for him to leave it registered in CA then.  His license is also from CA. We will add him to the title (for insurance pruposes)but I do need to check with him as I think his pay stubs say SC as his residence.  Not sure why he did that but hopefully it won't be a problem for him to change it back to CA.

Our son has USAA insurance. Very cooperative. His driver's license was CA. Car was registered in CA (waived smog check - we'll went to a local AAA and got the sticker w no problems). Car was driven from CA to NC, then shipped to HI (where he went to HI and got a exceptions or something like that).  USAA very good to work with.  We transferred title to our son.

FYI, buying a new car in SC, and registering it there is a great deal if you are stationed in the military at a SC military base and have a home of record somewhere other than SC.

South Carolina allows you to register your car in South Carolina and you are expempt from both Sales Tax on the Purchase and exempt from personal property tax on the vehicle.  Both exemptions apply only to car - one of the two exemptions does not apply to pickup trucks.
