FYI, buying a new car in SC, and registering it there is a great deal if you are stationed in the military at a SC military base and have a home of record somewhere other than SC.

South Carolina allows you to register your car in South Carolina and you are expempt from both Sales Tax on the Purchase and exempt from personal property tax on the vehicle.  Both exemptions apply only to car - one of the two exemptions does not apply to pickup trucks.

USAA does not care where the car is registered or where your drivers license is issued from.  They will issue a military members an insurance policy for the state it is garaged in which would be SC - they need a SC street address - 101 NNPTC Circle works fine if they are in the barracks.

For example my son's car was registered in WA state and his drivers license was WA state and his insurance was issued through USAA for South Carolina.

In SC it is legal to have your car registered in another state as long as you are in the military and do not show SC as your home of record on your pay stub ( LES - Leave and Earnings Statement ).

SC counties do have a personal property tax that will be collected if you register your car in South Carolina - there is a waiver process for some military members stationed in South Carolina - but you must follow the rules exactly and go through a paper work process to get the waiver if you register the car in South Carolina.  The most important rule is that only the Military Member must be shown as the Registered Owner on the title and registration.

On the car/registration questions - one more - is the vehicle required to be registered in Sailor's name to be on base?  Currently it is in mine and hubbies name. In order to transfer to his name only he has to be present - we can add his name and that can be done by mail.  Even though I have a POA for him they won't accept that for DMV stuff.

I spoke with the Automoble Club and the smog waiver is easy to do, you just complete a "Statement of Facts - exempt for smog" each time the smog comes due.  Then when it comes back to Cali you just get it smogged.

I'm going to call USAA myself - I'm sure if he is going to put the insurance in his name then his name will probably have to be on the title....Hopefully we can just add him to the title along with ours and that might be the easiest way.

The mailboxes at the mini-NEX--right there on base--are only $10/month and you can get your boxes/mail/whatever very easily and during much more times than the post office there at school.  My son had been in A-school for about 4 weeks when he got one and even though he's 1/2 through prototype, still has the same box. It's awesome--plus, the people at the mini-NEX are really wonderful!

Thanks susank and J's mom - I hadn't considered the smog situation but that could be a problem.  I'll contact DMV and see what the situation is with the waiver - and for how long it is good for.

He mentioned he would contact USAA - guess he just has to find the time now since Power school started!  And we still have to get the car shipped there!  It's good to hear that USAA is helpful :) Thanks again!

ladywolf:  Charlie is the alligator that has lived on base (I believe) for many years and has seen a lot of Nukes go thru the pipeline.  Not just an urban legend. . .

Michianamom, what is "Charlie"?

Comment by susank on July 23, 2013 at 1:25pm
B's nuke mom the problem we had leaving it registered in CA was the smog situation. It is hard to do that when the car is on the east coast. I think you can get a temporary waiver from CA if the car belongs to a miliary person. I am not sure. You should check that out. My son decided to register his car in SC. I don't think USAA cares where it is registered.

That's a sad thing to hear about pkgs at GC. I was looking forward to putting together some fun ones when my son got there. Guess I'll have to think of other ways to get goodies to him. It's too bad that they don't set up the PO to be open when the Nukes have their free time from class.
