OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

I'm just reading everyone's posts and taking it all in. I've been lurking in the group for awhile, since beginning of DEP, learning as I go, and I've learned a lot! I've already sent him the correct bug spray (lotion actually, cuz it's better), and warned him to watch out for Charlie! Subway gift cards will be in the next letter...I've learned a lot, but figure he needs to learn about most things on his own. That said, even though I'm not very active with posts of my own, I don't think there is a better place for us newbies to get info from.

This group seems bigger and ladies are on here longer as the school can be so long. So I find it hard to get to know anyone as many are in power school or prototype. Is there anyone else that is a newbie? I know he got there with 20 others from Great Lakes.

Comment by William in Nashua on July 22, 2013 at 5:51pm: Anybody who is a thief that would steal a classmate's shoes lacks the integrity to operate the nuclear power plant on a Navy warship, and should never become a Navy nuke. Since we are still talking about students in phase I of A school there are many chances for them to be weeded out, so just let time take its course. They will trip themselves up by cutting corners in other areas.

Comment by britefuture on July 22, 2013 at 5:45pm: I just got the craziest/scariest news. My son is on T Track and had been enjoying his, "summer off", until last Thursday. He woke up covered with hives. He went to medical and they put him on the usual, Benadryl. It happened to be that he used a fabric sheet of his roommates the night before. Therefor, we thought, as well as a Chief at medical, that this was a simple allergy. NOPE He has been pretty miserable. The hives were not responsive to the Benadryl and continued to spread. Oddly, they went way in one area, then popped up in another. I felt so horrible and cried because I couldn't be there to take care of my son. He was taken off of watch and sent back to medical at 0500 today. After blood work, a urine sample and a loading dose of 60 mg of Prednisone, they diagnosed him with a rare skin disorder. I assume that I can't post, here, what it's called. They said that it's not life threatening or contagious. He did have a conversation with his Chief who assured him that it won't disqualify him from the Nuke program. That made me feel a little better but I'm still worried. My son is 18 and has been on antibiotics just twice. Once for bronchitis and when he had his wisdom teeth pulled last month. He NEVER gets sick. We always referred to him as, "the carrier monkey", in our family. Finally, he's feeling better. The hives are nearly gone and he's out having dinner with his Buddies. While I'm very thankful that he's feeling better, I'm also very concerned about his future. Both with the Navy and in general. This ailment COULD last days, weeks, months or years. There's very little know about it.

He's in good spirits though. He's not worried or even thinking about leaving the Navy. He's, very much, focused on Power School's beginning. They gave him a start date of Aug 28th.

Ugh! Prayers to our Sailors. For ALL of their struggles.

And yes, it's true, nuke school doesn't mean instant honesty, while I do trust the select few will develop it with time.

I can say from his experience that everything is "up in the air" at the moment...my son's class is 290 people (3 times the normal size) and that threw a monkey wrench into everything..the staff was/is completely unprepared for that size of a class and can't seem to get things together. I keep saying they need to have some women in charge up there to get things organized--we all know how much better wimmenz are at that (William and Mark...no disrespect whatsoever). :)

Comment by suebal MM3 USS California SSN781 on July 22, 2013 at 10:48am: Theboywondermom...yes, just because they're in Nuke school doesn't mean that changes their "insides", if you know what I mean. To alleviate that happening to my son, I told him to go to Walmart and get "activated charcoal"--it comes in a box and is in the pet section where they have aquarium stuff. I also told him to get a pair of knee highs (he said he blushed getting them) and then to split the charcoal between the 2 of them. Put one in each sneaker after running and it really will help to combat those nasty (and they can get nasty) odors. I do it with my own shoes--I'm not a runner, but it helps to keep the odors down. Then, every once in a while, he can wash them in the machine there at school but instead of soap, add 2 cups of white vinegar to the machine--make sure he does the shoes by themselves. THAT will help too! Sorry for the longness of this, but I hope it helps.
