It seems strange that the rules apply if they were ever homeschooled. My son went back to public school for his senior year, so he had a diploma from a government school, plus a bachelor's degree from an accredited university, yet because he was homeschooled from grades 8 through 11, he still had to jump through more hoops.
J's Mom - Because homeschoolers do not typically have "accredited" diplomas (please don't get me started on that one), they used to be considered the same as high school drop outs when enlisting. These days, that's not the case and a homeschool diploma "counts" like any other high school diploma. Yes, there are some extra hoops to jump through to show everything. I had to create a transcript that was in the exact form desired (funny since I can't imagine a public/private school rearranging their standard form transcript to meet Navy requirements) and write a letter showing how/where our son was schooled and then provide documentation that he was homeschooled legally - if possible (it's not always something that is available since it's not always an issue depending on where you live). The extra work is both to show that a student was homeschooled and is not a drop out claiming to be homeschooled AND to provide more of a paper trail in a situation that our military is just not that familiar with.
As a homeschooling parent, I struggle with the extra scrutiny in many ways and chaff when I know that not all public schooled students are not getting quality educations. If their test scores are enough, then my son's test scores should be enough. But, as a homeschooling parent of 4 kids for the past 13 years, it's nothing new. And I'm very thankful for the test program through the years and recently the new law that allows homeschooled kids to enter our military on equal footing with any other public/private schooled student.
J's mom, your comment regarding home school made me laugh.
Our son had to take the Nuke test even though he scored above the minimum automatic entry point on the ASVAB for the same reason. He could not prove his home school curriculum.
The funny part was that he darn near aced the vocabulary section of the Nuke test not because he knew all the words, but because he had studied ( in home school ) so many English and Scientific words based on Latin and Greek roots using lighting. recognition software, that he was able to deduce the meaning based on the roots they contained.
He studied for the Physics portion of the Nuke test which he had not had in college, ignored studying for the Chemistry which he had completed a year of in college, and did not even know that a major part of the Nuke test was vocabulary. Of course he did the worse on Chemistry and the best on Vocabulary. Go figure.
They can get cable TV & internet in the barracks. Usually roommates split the cost and share the connection by using a wireless router. It is prettty slow internet but it works. The cost was maybe $20 per person.
Z's Mom, FYI, South Carolina Law Waives both sales tax and personal property tax on cars purchases by military members stationed in South Carolina who do not have South Carolina as there state of permanent residence as shown on their LES.
This can represent a substantial savings when buying a new car.
South Carolina allows military members to register their vehicles in South Carolina even regardless of where their permenant state of residence, regardless of where the drivers licensce is from, and regardless if they are eliblbe for the tax exemption.
Note - one of the tax exemptions mentioned above applies only to cars, not pickup trucks - just a quirk of South Carolina law.
oh ok so that is pretty much the year almost right there just in SC
All nukes go to Goose Creek, SC for A School and Power School. Prototype is at either Goose Creek of Ballston Spa, NY.
