The creator of this group has been inactive for quite some time. It is possible to make this group more private - the creator or an appointed admin could change the setting to private. I love this group, I have learned so much from reading the posts and I want to send out a big thank you to all of you. It seems like our Sailors have a great deal in common.
My son is very different then he was just a few months ago, before BC started. I love the changes in him, he has sooo much drive now.
I pray everyday for all of our Sailors. Have a great weekend!

I think they try and get them all to volunteer for subs, but they will get wherever the Navy needs them to be! I like this group because we are here to support our Nukes. Doesn't matter where they are in the pipeline as far as I am concerned! Just treat everyone with respect, respect OPSEC rules, take what you need from the information provided, give what you can when you can. I love my USA and all those serving in the military; past, present and future!

Yes, he is a Nuke.

Comment by Johanna on March 2, 2012 at 10:44pm
Hi Coloradomom, is he going to be a Nuke?
Comment by ColoradoMom Nuke ET on March 2, 2012 at 10:27pm

Okay everyone. . . my son is headed Goose Creek way in the morning.  After some last minute drama after PIR, well, he'll be on his way in about 24 hours.

Son is an ET and (a new development) has volunteered for sub duty.  He had previously said he wasn't interested in being on a sub.  I guess time will tell about all his plans!

I prefer a more "secure" place to post.  I can't remember who I need to talk to to get in to the facebook group.  If someone could help me. . .

Actually, this group is comprised primarily of members with enlisted sailors in the nuke program. There are just a handful of members with officers. The nuke program for officers is similar to the one for enlisted personnel but at a more in-depth level and with a broader emphasis. My son graduated with honors with a degree in electrical engineering from a top engineering university. Navy was not in his horizons as a college student. If he had applied and had been accepted into the Nupoc program as a sophomore in college, he could have saved us 60 to 80K. During his senior year in college, he decided he wanted an opportunity to get experience in management. In typical hi tech industry, a new college graduate would not get that experience. He went through Officer Candidate School, Power School, Prototype, then Sub school before he was sent out to the fleet as a nuke officer on a submarine. He will be the first to tell anyone that the strength of the boat is correlated to the strength of the enlisted crew; however, good officers will make the crew work better. My son is one of the rare breed who rolled up his sleeve, picked up the tools, went down to the bowels of the engine room and worked side-by-side with his crew. His crew will go out of the way to "protect" him - let him sleep (if they can solve the problem on their own), get him if there is a problem knowing that he will not blame them for the problem but will work with them to solve it. There are good officers and there are bad officers. Not every line officer who came up from the enlisted ranks is good. Yes, you'll find some officers (career guys) whose primary goal is to have an unblemished record so it'll look good on paper for advancement. But you'll find plenty of officers (regardless of how they got there) who will take the responsibility of being an officer seriously and will go beyond the expected to take care of the crew members in the group. My son was offered a bonus plus other bennies to reup. He has chosen for personal reasons to end his Navy career.

Respect comes from how you treat the crew members not how you got there.

BRAVA DCLYNN!!!!!!!  I have been trying to figure out a way to respond to oksuzy's comments without coming off like a b*&%h. My son feels exactly the same way about officers--they, most of the time, have no clue...it's the enlisted that keep it all going.

Aggie08Mom...I'm right there with you! My son was in JROTC all 4 years of high school and could very well have gone to one of the academies, but he wanted to enlist because (his words) "enlisted are the backbone..they do all the work..they are the ones that REALLY make up the Navy."  God bless ALL of our sailors--enlisted or officer!

dlynn, I was so glad to read your post.  When my son decided to join the Navy, everybody kept telling him he should apply of OCS.  He said exactly what you said, that he felt he'd get more respect from other sailors if he'd come up in rank while being enlisted.  He said just what you said, that because he'd been through basic and everything, he'd know what everybody was going through.  So thanks for your comment.

Yes all Nukes, Nukes-to-be, and their moms, dads, significant others are welcome here.

OkSuzy...this is not a site for only officers...this is a site for Nukes...whether they are enlisted or officers.  The enlisted guys although they eventually make Petty Officers are not Officers.  Nuke Officers generally (maybe not always) come into the pipe line via the Naval Academy or an ROTC program @ a college.

Dooby:  All Nukes attend this school, whether surface or sub, officer or enlisted.
